REIMAGINE: Global Conversations: Music Builds Community

Image

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgNUPCGZPik

Members of the Raag-Mala Society look back on 40 years of presenting spectacular performances and building community relationships. Board President Nishant Parekh, past-President Mohamed Khaki and Treasurer Aliya Ghose share stories of how the society has flourished, from holding concerts in basements of family homes in the early days to concerts for the world via digital and social media platforms today.

“Thanks to relationships we have built through the years, online opportunities came to us,” says Aliya.

Amirali Alibhai, Head of Performing Arts at the Aga Khan Museum, moderates the discussion, exploring issues around how Raag-Mala adapted to the pandemic, what next-generation support looks like, and whether Indian classical music is Canadian music.

Peer Perspectives: Courtney Stewart and a Precious Container

Image

Video:

Courtney Stewart, senior research assistant in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, presents a precious and notable object from the Aga Khan Museum Collection. Providing a glimpse into the opulence of India’s elite classes of the past, this perfume or snuff bottle was made in the 17th or 18th century, during the Mughal Empire, a period of profound wealth. The 24-carat-gold bottle is encrusted with red rubies; its top twists open to reveal a miniature spoon attached to the inside of the lid. It likely functioned as a holder for perfume or snuff, a flavoured scented tobacco product which was inhaled — the plant and the custom were introduced to India from the Americas.

The Public Curates: My Favourite Object with Kristina LaRocca

Image

Art lover, traveller, and Museum volunteer educator Kristina LaRocca’s favourite object in our Collection is as practical as it is beautiful. It also speaks to one of the central goals of the Museum: highlighting marvellous interconnections between the world’s major religious traditions.

The object she selected for her The Public Curates video for the #MuseumWithoutWalls is an astrolabe from 14th-century Spain. Astrolabes were used for finding the positions of stars and planets in the heavens in order to determine the time of day in a particular location. Its primary function in Islamic societies was to find the times for daily prayer.

This piece is unusual among other astrolabes of the period due to the inscriptions on its surface in three languages: Latin, Arabic, and Hebrew. The presence of these three scripts reflects the social and cultural diversity of al-Andalus, medieval Muslim-ruled Spain.

Pocket Performance: Blandine Mbiya

Image

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIcqwc__ICo

Discover the back story behind the bittersweet melodies of an achingly beautiful song by Congolese-Canadian singer-songwriter Blandine Mbiya.

As part of her performance for the Museum’s From Africa festival, the Toronto-based chanteuse paints a verbal picture of a traveller leaving on a boat from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, waving goodbye to his loved ones — and his hometown — as he departs. Watch the video to experience the gorgeous melancholy of Mbiya’s musical storytelling for yourself.

Streamed live on February 27, 2021, the From Africa: A Celebration for Black History Month was presented by the Aga Khan Museum and guest-curated by the Batuki Music Society.

To watch the full From Africa concert: https://youtu.be/Yh7hDJpamqY

Pocket Performances are presented by TD Bank Group.

Peer Perspective: The First Joust of the Rooks

Image

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qElKLdeBsA

A fearsome battle between two mounted warriors is the focus of MET curator emerita Dr. Sheila Canby’s latest Peer Perspective video for the #MuseumWithoutWalls.

From the Shahnameh (Book of Kings) of Shah Tahmasp, the 16th-century painting she features illustrates the first of 11 jousts between champions or “rooks” from Iran and their foes, the Turanians. On the Iranian side of the first joust was Faribuz, son of Shah Kay Kavus, while the Turanians fielded Kalbad, the brother of the king.

As Canby explains, this ferocious scene is not only action-packed, but it also provides a tantalizing glimpse into the worldview of the leaders of Safavid Iran.

To learn more about this artwork in the Museum’s Collection (accession number AKM497): https://agakhanmuseum.org/collection/...

The Museum’s Peer Perspective series features fascinating commentary and little-known facts from globally recognized scholars who have helped us open new windows onto the masterworks in our Collection.
