Mawlana Hazar Imam today concluded a visit to Qatar, where he met with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and His Excellency Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Fund for Development, to strengthen collaboration in global development and culture. Hazar Imam was accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad.

Two agreements were signed during the visit: a Memorandum of Understanding between the Aga Khan Development Network and the Qatar Fund for Development that aims to advance inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in support of countries facing urgent and multifaceted challenges; and a collaboration agreement between the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Qatar Museums.

The agreements will enable deeper collaboration in regions of common interest, including Central and South Asia and the Middle East, in fields such as economic empowerment, healthcare, climate resilience, education, training for heritage preservation, urban revitalisation, and music.

The visit continues the enduring engagement of the Ismaili Imamat with countries in the Gulf region, including the State of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Sultanate of Oman. Collaboration with institutions based in Qatar had begun in 2010 when Mawlana Shah Karim visited Doha at the conclusion of the 11th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

AKDN participates in Paris Nutrition for Growth Summit

France · 27 March 2025 ·

Image

Paris, France, 27 March 2025 – Malnutrition is one of the greatest threats to human development. It affects millions worldwide, particularly in regions facing poverty, conflict and the harshest effects of climate change – areas where the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is actively engaged. This week, AKDN is joining world leaders, policymakers and civil society organisations at the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit to accelerate action and mobilise financing for nutrition, a critical driver of human and economic development.

Hosted by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the N4G Steering Group and the Paris Peace Forum – of which AKDN is a founding partner – the Summit is taking place on 27-28 March, following a 20-year tradition of being organised by the host country of the most recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

President Emmanuel Macron hosted the gathering, where stakeholders committed to $27 billion in funding to tackle malnutrition. His Highness the Aga Khan attended a high-level event on 27 March hosted by President Macron, reaffirming AKDN’s commitment to advancing nutrition and food security. Watch President Macron’s speech.

The Summit is focused on three core areas essential to improving global nutrition: health and social protection, the transition to sustainable food systems, and the role of nutrition in building resilience in crises. It is also galvanising action on gender equality, data and innovation, and finance and accountability.

As part of its longstanding commitment to addressing malnutrition through integrated, multisectoral approaches, AKDN has committed $45 million to nutrition and food systems.

High-level side events earlier in the week explored strategies to embed nutrition into broader development efforts, close the $13 billion annual funding gap, and set measurable national targets. AKDN representatives contributed to key discussions, including:

March 24: A session on “Immunisation-Nutrition-Integration: Strengthening Health Systems for Sustainable Impact”, featuring Dr Aminah Jahangir (Regional Advisor, Health and Nutrition, Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan) alongside GAVI, Power of Nutrition and Results UK. Dr Jahangir shared results from AKDN’s integrated approach in northern Pakistan, where efforts have helped raise full immunisation coverage among children to 96 percent – well above the national average of 74 percent – and significantly reduce stunting rates to 18 percent (compared to the national average of 44 percent). Building on this model, AKDN has expanded efforts to underserved districts where immunisation rates were as low as 18 percent and acute malnutrition topped 25 percent.

March 27: A side event hosted by the OECD and Stronger Foundations for Nutrition, where Matt Reed (CEO, Aga Khan Foundation UK) moderated a panel on philanthropic action for nutrition.

AKDN’s participation at N4G 2025 underscores its commitment to improving nutrition outcomes and addressing food insecurity as part of its broader work in climate resilience and sustainable development.

Nice, France, 9 June 2025 – His Highness the Aga Khan joined Heads of State and government leaders from around the world for the launch of the third UN Oceans Conference, which was hosted by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in Nice.

Under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” the conference aims to support further and urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. This is in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – specifically SDG 14, which states: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”

The conference brings together over 60 countries as well as intergovernmental organisations, international financial institutions, NGOs, civil society organisations, academic institutions and other actors committed to supporting the oceans.

The Ismaili Imamat and its institutions work closely with France in multiple areas of activity, and AKDN is a Knowledge Partner of the Conference. Drawing on decades of experience in supporting coastal communities, the Aga Khan Foundation is implementing the Indian Ocean Coastal Regeneration Initiative in India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan and Tanzania, to strengthen the livelihoods of millions of coastal residents and protect and restore 100,000 hectares of coastal ecosystems.

His Highness the Aga Khan said, “We have a shared responsibility to care for our oceans, which cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface. As part of the fight against climate change, our institutions are helping to ensure the protection of these precious natural resources.”

Prince Hussain Aga Khan, His Highness’s younger brother and an avid conservationist with a life-long commitment to protecting wildlife, was also present. A collection of his stunning underwater photographs is being exhibited in Nice during UNOC. “It was an honour for me to have my photographs displayed at UNOC and to join my brother and the AKDN Delegation as well as conservation partners gathered to try to solve the biggest problems facing the oceans today,” commented Prince Hussain.

Mawlana Hazar Imam and and His Excellency President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique today signed an agreement of cooperation to deepen relations between the Ismaili Imamat and the Republic of Mozambique. Building on a long history of cooperation between the two parties, the agreement covers a variety of sectors including education, health, culture, environmental protection and socio-economic development.

“This is an agreement that aims to strengthen the historic ties between Mozambique and the Ismaili Imamat, and to establish and consolidate partnerships in areas of common interest, with a particular emphasis on education,” stated President Chapo. “I personally had the privilege of visiting the Aga Khan Academy in Matola, Maputo province, which is truly impressive for training future leaders. Fifty years of independence is an auspicious occasion, and the signing of this agreement truly is a gift for Mozambique because we will achieve so much together.”

“We have a lot to be proud of today, and of what both of our predecessors, and their predecessors, accomplished in this country together,” said Hazar Imam. “The agreement that we signed today will allow us to deepen the friendship and collaboration. There is an exciting future ahead for us.”

Hazar Imam is in Mozambique as a guest of the President. He will attend, alongside other Heads of State, the commemoration of the country’s 50th anniversary of independence this week.

This is his first visit to Mozambique since becoming, earlier this year, 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. His previous visit was in 2022 to attend the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy in Maputo. He was received, upon his arrival yesterday, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Her Excellency Ambassador Manuela Lucas. During his visit he also met the Chairperson of the Mozambican Parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, Her Excellency Margarida Talapa as well as the heads of the four parliamentary groups and the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for International Relations, Co-operation and Communities.

The Aga Khan Development Network has been active in Mozambique since 1998, working to improve the quality of life of citizens through the Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Schools and the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.

The Aga Khan Foundation has been operating in Mozambique since 2000. It implements integrated, innovative and gender-sensitive programmes in agriculture and food security; health and nutrition; work and enterprise; climate resilience; and civil society strengthening. Programmes prioritise vulnerable and underserved populations, including farmers, entrepreneurs, unemployed graduates, vulnerable women and children, and internally displaced people, amongst others. In 2024, AKF directly served more than 150,000 people across the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, Nampula and Maputo. Through its partnerships with government and civil society it reached a further 360,000 and 500,000 people, respectively.

In Maputo, the Aga Khan Academy, opened in 2013, offers co-educational, residential education and the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum to more than 400 students from 22 nationalities. Admission is based on merit and is means-blind. It is part of an integrated network of residential schools with other campuses in Mombasa, Kenya; Hyderabad, India; and Dhaka, Bangladesh. Its Professional Development Centre invests heavily in professional learning for teachers at local government schools. The Centre has to date trained more than 5,000 school educators and principals.

Sponsored by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, Moztex is an export-oriented garment manufacturing company in Maputo province. It produces more than 5.5 million garments annually for export primarily to South Africa. It employs around 1,200 people, nearly 9 out of 10 of whom are women. It has continuously invested in training and has so far trained approximately 2,100 people.

Mozambique: Chapo and Aga Khan sign agreement – AIM
2:18 CAT | 24 Jun 2025

Image

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan on Monday signed an agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation in various sectors of development.

According to Chapo, the first agreement between Mozambique and the Aga Khan Foundation was established in 1998, resulting in the full presence of the Aga Khan Network in the country. “To mark these historic moments, we have decided to sign a new agreement today. It is very important for our country and our people, because we have clear evidence of various development projects that have been carried out over these 25 years”, he said.

In Mozambique, the Aga Khan network supports development projects in health, education, infrastructure and rural development.

Subject: Golden Jubilee Moments: -50 years - Reflecting on Mozambique, Pluralism, and Responsibilities of Leaders & us all

Dear all members of the one Jamat, Noorani family, all leaders,

On June 25, 2025, Mozambique celebrated 50 years of independence — a Golden Jubilee of freedom, resilience, and progress. His Highness the Aga Khan was honoured to join President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal, and several other Heads of State from across Africa and beyond at Machava Stadium and Heroes’ Acre in Maputo to mark this historic milestone.

This moment was not only one of diplomatic significance — it was one of deep human connection. His Highness was seen seated alongside fellow Heads of State, many of whom represent countries where the Ismaili community has lived, served, and contributed for generations. The presence of the Imam of the Time among these leaders reflects not merely institutional ties, but enduring relationships between the Ismaili community and the peoples of many nations — relationships built on trust, mutual respect, and shared aspirations for dignity and opportunity.

It is important to emphasise that these partnerships are not simply between governments and institutions — they are between the people of these nations and the Ismaili community, rooted in values and service. While our institutions play an important facilitative role, the spirit of the Ismaili Constitution, ordained by His Highness the Aga Khan, is clear: it is the Jamat and the people who matter first, and leadership must act as custodians of that trust — not gatekeepers. The community’s contributions across East Africa, including Mozambique, date back to the 1880s, when Imam Aga Ali Shah (Aga Khan II) encouraged migration and economic settlement from India to East Africa.

Today, under the current Imam, the Ismaili community continues to engage with the world through its constitutional framework, guided by the values of pluralism, inclusion, service, and ethical leadership. The new cooperation agreement signed between the Ismaili Imamat and the Government of Mozambique reaffirms these commitments. It spans:

• Education, especially through the Aga Khan Academy in Matola, providing merit-based access to world-class learning

• Healthcare, strengthening public health and human well-being

• Cultural preservation and environmental stewardship

• Economic development, including initiatives like MozTex, which now employs over 1,300 Mozambicans

Portugal, which now hosts the Seat of the Ismaili Imamat and the official global residence of His Highness, continues to embody this spirit of partnership, intercultural dialogue, and respect for human dignity.

As we reflect on these historic moments, we must also look inward. This is an opportunity — indeed, a responsibility — for all of us, especially our leaders, to re-align with the guidance and Farmans of Mawlana Hazar Imam. For decades, His Highness has emphasised the centrality of pluralism and inclusion — not as ideals, but as directives. These are not optional aspirations; they are directions grounded in the ethics of Islam and the very foundation of our Constitution.

Sadly, these directives have too often been ignored or rejected in practice. Despite multiple respectful requests from members of the Jamat, there remains no full or transparent access to the Ismaili Constitution or the full body of Farmans. This has undermined understanding, accountability, and trust. Questions remain unanswered regarding institutional governance, including matters related to the passing of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s late brother Prince Amyn Aga Khan, court cases such as the one in Kenya, and the broader issue of Farman suppression and institutional opacity.

This moment — shared publicly with the world — is an invitation & opportunity to reset.

Let pluralism be taught across our institutions. Why https://x.com/chaturmahebub/status/1938 ... hqfO552USg

Let the Constitution and Farmans be made fully accessible to the Jamat as Hazar Imam directed & reminded on 18 March 225

Let our leaders return to listening, including not controlling or excluding

And

Let the Noorani family, who are deeply loved and respected, stand openly with the Jamat in protecting and advancing the Imam’s guidance together with Jamat — not shielding Farmans

With humility and hope,

Mawlana Hazar Imam participates in commemoration to mark 50 years of Mozambique’s independence

Image

On the last day of his visit to Mozambique, Mawlana Hazar Imam was the guest of His Excellency Daniel Chapo, President of Mozambique, for a series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence.

Alongside Heads of State and representatives from over 30 countries, Hazar Imam participated in the laying of a wreath at the Monument of Mozambican Heroes. He then joined other dignitaries at Machava Stadium – where Independence was declared in 1975 – for a series of speeches, military parades and the lighting of a symbolic flame. International dignitaries were later hosted for a luncheon at the Presidential Palace by President Chapo.

Yesterday evening, Hazar Imam departed Mozambique as AKDN Representative for Mozambique Nazim Ahmad bid him farewell, along with Ambassador Manuela Lucas, Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; and Mr Fredson Bacar, Secretary of State for Tourism.

Earlier in the visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam and President Chapo signed an agreement to enhance collaboration between the Ismaili Imamat and the Republic of Mozambique.

Testimony

Ya Ali Madad,

I wish to share with you an experience that was both deeply humbling and spiritually uplifting — a journey of longing, patience, and a miracle that unfolded before our very eyes.

On the 24th June , the three of us stood outside the Polana Serena Hotel in Maputo from 8am to 8pm, unaware of the itinerary but full of hope. The kind taxi drivers even brought us chairs so we could sit in the cool breeze and wait. At one point, the security personnel came out and informed everyone gathered that Shah Rahim would not be coming out today, and many people began to leave. But we stayed.

The security team felt genuinely sorry for us. They advised us to go freshen up, attend Jamatkhana, enjoy the dandia raas, and the biryani. We simply said, “Yes, we shall go, but we will wait for Him first.” The police standing outside mentioned that the President of Portugal was expected around 6pm. So, we waited with the quiet hope that Shah Rahim might come out to receive him.

Sadly, He did not come out that day.

I must mention here that our confirmed booking at Polana Serena was cancelled upon arrival and we were told that the hotel was under government control during this time, and only those vetted by the government could stay. We were not refunded, for a booking that was already paid for and cancelled on arrival. That Serena would leave us in a lurch like this was incredulous. We were left confused because we saw many others in the lobby, including people attending events like the ABSA Bank function. Were all of them vetted too?

Furthermore, we were utterly exhausted after our overnight journey. Even a simple request to have coffee or a glass of water was declined by the General Manager, Mr Nelson Rodrgrues ( proofs of conversation recordings available ) That level of disregard and inhospitality, especially during such a spiritual time for us, left us deeply hurt. It truly felt as though someone didn’t want us to be there.

Still, we remained outside the gate of Polana Serena the entire day. Other murids had given up and left. One tall security guard came up to us at the end of the day and said, almost tauntingly:

“Very sorry, very bad luck for you three.”

But we calmly replied:

“Don’t be sorry. We are just happy to wait for Him. Whether He gives us a glimpse or not that is His will. We don’t mind hunger or thirst, we are here only for His Deedar.”

Touched by our words, the volunteers brought us bottles of water. For that, we are deeply thankful.

Now here comes the turning point — the miracle.

Around 7pm, two men approached us. They spoke perfect English and asked who we were waiting for. We told them, “We want to see the Aga Khan, and maybe since the President of Portugal is coming, we might see both.” They nodded and told us they were organizing a major event at the Machava Stadium the next day. We said, “That sounds amazing! We wish we could come see it.”

To our surprise, the man said,

“Everyone is welcome. Please come.”

He asked where we were from. We said Kenya, and that this was our first visit to Mozambique in 20 years. He smiled warmly and said, “You are most welcome. In fact, please take these.”

Then he handed us three VIP Guest Passes for the next day’s stadium event. He said:

“Wear these passes and come tomorrow. You’ll really enjoy the ceremony.”

At that time the true significance of this happening did not really strike us . We thanked him and promised to try to attend.

As we walked back to our hotel, a large crowd was heading toward us on the pavement in the dark . As the entourage approached us, we moved aside, but one person detached himself from the group and rushed towards us . To our surprise, it was the President of Portugal himself: Marcello Ribero de Sousa !

He kissed me on both cheeks , heartily shook my brother’s hand and said that the Aga Kan was really very happy and wished us great joy ! After which he joined his re-joined his entourage down the road . His limousine arrived and whisked him away … we were stunned to say the least ! The President of Portugal walking outside the hotel in the dark ? We really didn’t know what to make of it….

The next day, we decided to go the Machava Stadium with the passes we were given . These cards were potent and landed us in the VIP box in the row above the one in which Shah Rahim was Himself seated . We had a direct view of Him for over five full hours, we were able to see Shah Rahim from a close, side-viewing position. It was unbelievable! ( video of Him at the stadium, taken by us , currently circulating )

As soon as the event ended, we rushed back to Polana Serena and Shah Rahim came out again, with His window down, smiling and waving.

He returned once more at 6.20 pm smiles and waves in full evidence . Later in the evening at around 8.20pm smiling and waving at the Jamat yet again!

We were on top of the world.! Shukhran Allahamdullilah ….A million Shukhranas to our Beloved Mowla 🙏🙏🙏❤️
