In accordance with the guidance of Mawlana Hazar Imam, the Uganda Didar is intended exclusively for residents of Uganda permanently residing in Uganda. It is Mawlana Hazar Imam’s desire that each murid attend only one Didar during the current cycle of Didars.

Additionally, as per the practice, information of eligible individuals who have attended Didar in Uganda and qualify for attending Didars in other countries will be shared with those countries so that there is transparency and restraint from attending multiple Didars, in line with the guidance.

Didar Eligibility Criteria

Murids must meet all the following criteria to qualify:

- Have resided continuously in Uganda for at least six months within the twelve-month period preceding the Didar, to be verified from date of entry.
- Have not emigrated to any country in the recent past.
- Hold valid identification or immigration status, such as:
- Ugandan passport or national ID
- Certificate of Residence
- Business/Work permit
- Student pass
- Dependent pass

Note:

- Residency is not determined solely by citizenship, possession of government-issued ID, or having business in Uganda unless the above conditions are satisfied.
- Individuals qualifying for Didar requiring caregivers must indicate at the time of registration, as nannies and non-registered persons will not be permitted to serve as caregivers.

Special Categories

Murids eligible in the following categories will be required to sign a declaration confirming their choice, and relevant Councils will be notified to avoid duplication in participation:

- Foreign students currently studying in Uganda with a valid student visa or permit must present an enrollment confirmation letter from their educational institution.
- Children of eligible permanent residents, who are temporarily studying abroad on a valid student visa will be eligible.

Note:

Individuals or children of qualifying permanent residents who are now residing and/or working abroad are not eligible, even if they retain ties to Uganda.

Other Special Cases

Afghan murids who have arrived in Uganda on or before 24th July 2025 are eligible for the Didar.

Criteria for Youth Mulaqat

Apart from fully meeting the general residency criteria above, to qualify, the Youth member shall have attained the age of 15 years and shall not have turned 26 years of age on the date of the Mulaqat, i.e., their age should not be more than 25 years and 364 days.

Commencement of Registration

The registration will be done phase-wise starting from Darkhana. The date of commencement of registration will be communicated via Jamati WhatsApp.

Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is with the deepest joy and immense gratitude that I join you in celebrating this historic occasion of our Beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam’s first visit to Uganda as the 50th Imam, continuing the legacy of The Rope of Imamat. We are honored that this visit comes at the gracious invitation of His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, deepening the enduring bonds of friendship and collaboration between the Imamat and its institutions, and our nation.

For the Jamat, the blessing of Didar is a priceless gift, one that will uplift our hearts, illuminate our minds, and touch our souls. Poet Da‘i Nasir Khusraw writes in his Dīwān:
"When the light of the Imam of the time shone upon my soul, Even though I was dark as night, I became the glorious sun.“

As One Jamat, let us prepare ourselves – body, mind, heart, and soul – to experience this Didar with humility, dignity, and boundless love. Let this also be an opportunity to reaffirm our Bayyah and embody the noble values our Imam inspires in us: unity, compassion, excellence, service to humanity, and stewardship of the natural world entrusted to our care.

On behalf of the entire leadership and the Jamat, we offer our humble Shukrana to our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam for his continuous guidance and pray that the visit is blessed with success and that every Murid’s wishes are fulfilled.

We would also like to thank all the volunteers who are working with dedication and selflessness to make the Didar memorable for the entire Jamat.

May this historic occasion leave us elevated in faith, knowledge, service, and spirit.

Ya Ali Madad, and Mubaraki to each and every one of you.

Hunafa – The Community of Truth

Image

Over 130 energetic young members of the Jamat, aged 15 to 25, came together on August 17th, 2025 for Hunafa – The Community of Truth, a truly transformative youth day camp, organised by ITREB for Uganda. This inspiring event sparked deeper spiritual understanding of our faith, as the youth prepared to warmly welcome the Imam-of-the-Time. Through exciting sessions and activities, participants explored core themes of faith, unity, and service while building a strong sense of community.

The Hunafa Youth Day Camp provided a unique opportunity for the youth to strengthen their values, and prepare their hearts and minds to receive the blessings of the Zaheri Didar of Mawlana Shah Rahim al Hussaini Hazar Imam. The participants embarked on a quest to explore the key themes such as Didar, Bay’ah, Imamah, Zikr, Nazrana, Ab-e-Shafa, Mehmani, Diversity and Unity - equipping themselves with lasting insights into our faith.

More than just learning, Hunafa also fostered a powerful sense of community and belonging, encouraging them to embrace ethical living while remaining firmly grounded in the principles of the faith. It also created space for reflection on how the guidance of the Imam continues to inspire purposeful lives and service to others.

This unforgettable gathering highlighted the importance of youth engagement in building resilient, ethical, and forward-looking communities, rooted in the timeless values of Islam.

2025-09-05: Memo of AKU President Dr Suleiman

PDF: https://ismaili.net/timeline/2025/2025-09-05-memo.pdf

MEMORANDUM
To: Faculty, Staff, and Students of AKU
From: Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin
Date: September 5, 2025

Subject: Message by President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin to AKU Global Community
on Kampala Campus Inauguration

I am writing to you today with a deep sense of pride and immense excitement. We are on the cusp
of a truly historic moment for our University. On September 11, 2025, we will officially launch
our new campus in Kampala, Uganda, and commence construction of the new Aga Khan
University Hospital, Kampala.
This is not just a new building or another project. It is a powerful and meaningful step forward in
our shared mission. The land for the campus was generously provided by the Government of
Uganda and funding for its construction was provided by our Founding Chancellor, generous
donors and the Government of Germany’s BMZ and KfW.

A central vision of both our Founding Chancellor, His Late Highness the Aga Khan IV and
Ugandan President H.E Yoweri Museveni was that the Aga Khan University and its Hospital would
create meaningful public and private partnerships. This is evident by the location of the new
campus, which will allow us to engage with the local community and develop close working
relationships for joint research, joint delivery of academic programmes and healthcare services.
The campus will also be part of an integrated healthcare and education system of the Aga Khan
Development Network in East Africa.

The new campus is stunning, featuring a seven-storey University Centre, a nine-storey student
housing building and a four-storey ambulatory care building, the Nakawa Specialty Medical
Centre. At full capacity, the University will be home to 100 faculty and 700 students – 164 of
whom will be living full-time on campus in the new student housing building. We cannot wait to
welcome the first cohort of the new four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science programme later this
month. The upcoming 101-bed hospital will enable Ugandans to receive advanced care locally and
train the healthcare specialists the country urgently needs.

In Uganda, our alumni hold leadership positions in clinics, hospitals, schools, universities, media
organizations and government. In addition to graduates of our degree and diploma programmes,
more than 7,000 Ugandan educators, health professionals, journalists and communicators have
gained new skills through our short courses and certificate programmes. This expansion will not
only extend our reach but also provide greater access to education and healthcare for the people of
Uganda and, more broadly, throughout East Africa.

To mark this milestone, we are honoured to have both the President of Uganda, His Excellency
Hon. Yoweri Museveni, and our Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan, presiding over the
ceremony. We are also delighted that Princess Zahra Aga Khan, the University’s Pro-Chancellor,
Prince Aly Muhammad and the First Lady of Uganda will also be present.

For those who can’t be there in person, we want to ensure you don’t miss a moment. We have
arranged to livestream the ceremony for our global audience on AKU’s website, AKU Global
YouTube and Facebook pages, as well as Ismaili TV. Livestream links and details on in-person
viewing across our campus will also be announced soon.

I also want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has helped us reach this milestone
moment. From the tireless work of our past and current leaders, projects and campus development
teams, to the support of our faculty and staff, and to the generous donations of our supporters and
partners, this project truly represents the power of collaboration and a shared commitment to our
mission.

A few photos of the new campus are provided below for you to view and share in the excitement
of this historic moment.
Thank you.

---------------

Uganda – A Most Glorious Padhramani

The padhramani in Uganda was nothing short of radiant, joyful, majestic, and deeply moving. This small country, rightly known as the Pearl of Africa, offered a welcome to Mawlana Hazar Imam (MHI) that will remain etched in memory for years to come.

The afternoon of Wednesday, 10 September 2025, unfolded like a living tapestry of devotion and national pride. At 5 p.m., inside Entebbe Airport, MHI was received with the highest state honours. A guard of honour lined the tarmac as He stepped onto a ceremonial podium, where He stood with quiet dignity while the National Anthem of Uganda and the Nshid-e-Imamah were rendered by the Royal Band of Uganda. The Imam looked truly majestic in this solemn setting, an image of grace and spiritual authority, before the mood gently brightened with the entrance of colourful, exuberant traditional dancers. The presence of Princess Zahra and Prince AlyMuhammad added an extra glow of splendour to the occasion.

Outside the airport, an equally heart-warming spectacle awaited. The entire Jamat, including murids from beyond Uganda’s borders, was invited to share in this historic welcome. Shuttles carried thousands of eager hearts from Coco Beach to a specially designated UN zone where a vast shamiana had been erected to shield everyone from the equatorial sun. From loudspeakers floated Mowla’s beloved geets, filling the air with festive anticipation. Volunteers moved graciously among the crowd, offering delicious vegetarian and chicken pies with refreshing mango juice, generosity in the truest Ismaili spirit.
As news spread that MHI’s plane had landed, the atmosphere quickened. Within minutes, the vast gathering of more than 2,000 murids was guided seamlessly from the shaded pavilion to the roadside. Senior members were thoughtfully seated in front, while scouts, girl guides, and volunteers organized the long, kilometre-wide line of welcome. Each person held a dual-sided flag, the emblem of MHI on one side and the Ugandan flag on the other, ready to greet their Imam.

Then came the moment of fulfilment. The first police escort motorcycle appeared, prompting a wave of joyful chants that rippled the full length of the avenue. As MHI’s car advanced slowly, He lowered His window and, with radiant smiles and continuous hand-waves, blessed every group along the route. Scouts and girl guides burst with ebullient cheers; elders’ eyes shone with quiet devotion and tears of joy . It was a first didar that touched every heart present.

Gratitude overflowed. The meticulous planning, the generous hospitality, and the spiritual intimacy of this reception were beyond compare. Shukran lillah wa-l-hamdulillah. All praise to the Ugandan government for its gracious partnership, and to the National Council of Uganda for orchestrating a welcome so flawless and joy-filled. Truly, Uganda gave the world a shining example of unity, devotion, and the timeless bond between the Imam and His Jamat.

As for us, our hearts overflow , with shukranas for every blessing received, with gratitude for being counted among those who witnessed these sacred moments, and with deep humility before the immense love and grace of Mawlana Hazar Imam. 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤

Aga Khan arrives in Kampala today to launch construction of specialized hospital

Image
Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, is expected in Uganda today to inaugurate the new Aga Khan University (AKU) campus in Nakawa and officially launch the construction of the Aga Khan Hospital.

This marks Prince Rahim’s first visit to Uganda since succeeding his late father, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, in February. The visit is being hailed as a historic milestone for both the Ismaili community and Uganda’s health and education sectors.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday in Nakawa, Kampala, Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin , president of Aga Khan University, confirmed the event and shared details of the upcoming ceremony. “To mark this occasion, we are honoured to welcome His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and our Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan, who will jointly preside over the ceremony. We are also delighted that Princess Zahra Aga Khan, the University’s Pro-Chancellor, Prince Aly Muhammad, and Uganda’s First Lady will be in attendance.” Dr Shahabuddin said.

He added, “For those unable to attend in person, we’ve arranged a live stream of the ceremony on AKU’s website to ensure a global audience can participate.” The main ceremony will take place tomorrow at the Nakawa campus, where the Aga Khan will inaugurate the newly completed AKU centre and a nine-storey student housing complex.

The programme will also include the groundbreaking of the Aga Khan University Hospital, a flagship referral and teaching facility expected to significantly transform Uganda’s healthcare landscape.

Background
Prince Rahim, 53, formally assumed leadership of the global Ismaili community following the death of his father, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, on February 4.
In March, he became Chancellor of Aga Khan University, continuing the legacy of his father, who founded the institution in 1983 to promote excellence in education, healthcare, and research.

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), through its various agencies, has maintained a long-standing presence in Uganda. Its investments span multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, insurance, media, and community development, through initiatives such as the Aga Khan Schools, medical centres, Jubilee Insurance, Nation Media Group, and a wide range of grassroots programmes.
The new AKU campus and hospital in Kampala represent AKDN’s largest single investment in education and healthcare in Uganda to date.

Museveni to launch Aga Khan University, new specialist hospital in Kampala

By Remmy Asiteza / Wednesday, September 10, 2025

Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni will tomorrow, Thursday, September 11, join His Highness the Aga Khan to officially open the new Aga Khan University (AKU) campus in Nakawa, Kampala, a landmark development for higher education and healthcare in Uganda and East Africa.

The ceremony will also feature the groundbreaking of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala — a 101-bed state-of-the-art facility expected to transform healthcare delivery in Uganda when completed in 2027.

According to AKU President Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, the milestone is a “powerful and meaningful step forward” in advancing public-private partnerships envisioned by the late His Highness the Aga Khan IV and President Museveni.

“This is not just another building; it is the realisation of a shared vision that will foster impactful collaborations in education, research, and healthcare,” Dr. Shahabuddin said in a press statement.

The Kampala campus, located just opposite the Nakawa Business Park, features a seven-storey university centre, a nine-storey student residence, and the Nakawa Specialty Medical Centre.

At full capacity, the university will host 700 students, 100 faculty, and 164 resident students. The first intake for the new four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science programme arrives this month.

The mega hospital project, DailyExpress understands, will provide advanced specialist care, reducing the need for Ugandans to seek treatment abroad.

Dr. Shahabuddin also highlighted the role of AKU’s strong alumni network, noting that over 7,000 Ugandan educators have already benefited from the university’s training and certificate programmes.

The event will be attended by First Lady Janet Museveni, Princess Zahra Aga Khan, and Prince Aly Muhammad, and will be livestreamed globally via AKU’s digital platforms and Ismaili TV.

Aga Khan University currently offers four academic programmes, with plans to expand into education, media, and health sciences once it secures a charter from the National Council for Higher Education. The Graduate School of Media and Communications in Nairobi is also preparing to launch Ugandan programmes locally.

Museveni to launch Aga Khan University
Wednesday, September 10, 2025

By Damali Mukhaye
--------------
What you need to know:

Once chartered, the university plans to introduce new programmes next year, including a Bachelor of Education, Executive Master’s in Media Leadership and Innovation, Master of Education, Master of Science in Advanced Practice Midwifery, and Master of Arts in Digital Journalism.
--------------

President Museveni and His Highness the Aga Khan will tomorrow
officially inaugurate the new Aga Khan University (AKU) campus in
Kampala, marking a historic milestone for the university's presence in
Uganda and the broader East African region.

(AD)

The event will also feature the ground breaking ceremony for the Aga
Khan University Hospital, Kampala, a 101-bed facility set to transform
healthcare delivery in the country. The hospital is expected to be completed
by 2027.

In a press statement, AKU president Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin described
the occasion as "a powerful and meaningful step forward in our shared
mission."

"This is not just another building or project,It's the realisation of a vision
shared by our Founding Chancellor, the late His Highness the Aga Khan
IV, and President Museveni, that the university and its hospital would
foster impactful public-private partnerships," he said.

Dr Shahabuddin emphasised that the campus's location in Nakawa will
enable AKU to collaborate closely with local communities, conduct joint
research, and deliver academic and healthcare services in partnership with
Ugandan institutions.

"The campus is remarkable," he added, "featuring a seven-storey university
centre, a nine-storey student residence, and a four-storey ambulatory care
facility, the Nakawa Specialty Medical Centre."

At full capacity, the university will accommodate 700 students and 100
faculty members, with 164 students residing on campus. The first cohort of
the new four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science programme is expected to
arrive later this month.

The upcoming hospital will offer advanced medical care, including
specialist services that will reduce the need for Ugandans to seek treatment
abroad. "This expansion will not only broaden our reach but also improve
access to quality education and healthcare for Ugandans and East
Africans," Dr Shahabuddin said.

He also highlighted Uganda's strong network of AKU alumni, many of
whom hold leadership roles in healthcare, media, education, and
government. To date, over 7,000 Ugandan educators have benefited from
AKU's short courses and certificate programmes.

The inauguration ceremony will be presided over by President Museveni
and His Highness the Aga Khan V, the University's Chancellor. First Lady
Janet Museveni, Princess Zahra Aga Khan (AKU's Pro-Chancellor), and
Prince Aly Muhammad will also attend.

"We are honoured to welcome such distinguished guests," Dr Shahabuddin
said, noting that the event will be livestreamed globally via the university's
website, YouTube, Facebook, and Ismaili TV. The event will also receive
wide coverage through Nation Media Group platforms.

AKU completes campus relocation

Speaking to journalists at the new Nakawa campus, Dr Joseph Mwizerwa,
the associate vice provost for Uganda, confirmed that the university
completed its relocation from the Gaddafi Road campus in Old Kampala in
July, following the fulfilment of all statutory and regulatory requirements.

"We initially planned to move in June, but the transition occurred in July
after securing all necessary clearances, including occupation permits and
approval from the National Council for Higher Education," Dr Mwizerwa
said.

Regarding the former campus, he explained that the facilities have been
handed over to the Aga Khan Foundation-Uganda, which is working with
Aga Khan Education Services to repurpose the site.

" ... we are a family of institutions. That location was no longer
economically viable for us, but another institution will make good use of
it," he said.

Dr Nicholas Kitende, the university's academic registrar, said AKU
currently offers four academic programmes: a Diploma in General Nursing,
a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, and
the newly approved Bachelor of Nursing Science, which will admit
students directly from Senior Six.

Dr Mwizerwa also announced that AKU's Graduate School of Media and
Communications, based in Nairobi, is preparing to launch its programmes
in Uganda. This will enable Ugandan students to study locally rather than
travel to Kenya.

"These programmes are undergoing accreditation, and once approved, they
will be offered here," he said. AKU is also progressing toward acquiring a
charter from the National Council for Higher Education.

"We began this process some time ago, and we expect it to culminate in a
charter soon," Dr Mwizerwa added.

Once chartered, the university plans to introduce new programmes next
year, including a Bachelor of Education, Executive Master's in Media
Leadership and Innovation, Master of Education, Master of Science in
Advanced Practice Midwifery, and Master of Arts in Digital Journalism.

News Report: Aga Khan Inaugurates New University Campus in Kampala

Kampala, Uganda – September 11, 2025

His Highness the Aga Khan today inaugurated the new Aga Khan University (AKU) campus in Nakawa, Kampala, in the presence of President Yoweri Museveni, senior government officials, dignitaries, and members of the Ismaili community. The occasion also marked the commencement of construction of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala – a landmark project set to transform healthcare in Uganda and the wider region.

In his remarks, the Aga Khan expressed profound appreciation to the Ugandan leadership: “I begin by extending my deepest gratitude to the President and Government of Uganda: for the generous gift of the land upon which this campus now stands; for your unwavering support to the Aga Khan Development Network; and for creating an enabling environment across sectors – education, healthcare, infrastructure – so that communities may be uplifted in dignity, opportunity, and well-being.”

The new campus, which includes a seven-storey University Centre, a nine-storey student residence, and a four-storey ambulatory care facility (Nakawa Specialty Medical Centre), is designed to deliver world-class education within East Africa. The Aga Khan noted: “This new campus is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies a shared vision: the vision of AKDN’s mandate to empower communities, improve quality of life, and foster sustainable, inclusive development. It is part of a network of sister campuses in East Africa, dedicated to serving East Africans locally – so that talented students need not leave our region to access excellence in higher education. Ugandans deserve nothing less than world-class standards, and this facility is a step in achieving that.”

He emphasized that the university is committed not just to aspiration, but to ensuring both excellence and accessibility. “Education must be affordable; it must reach those most vulnerable, those who may not otherwise have the resources. Already, the Aga Khan Development Network provides substantial assistance annually to Ugandans, supporting many who cannot afford full fees. The goal is clear: access, relevance, impact enable & empower.”

His Highness also underlined the importance of knowledge creation through research, innovation, and local relevance, including the careful and responsible use of artificial intelligence: “Modern tools such as artificial intelligence must be used judiciously and responsibly so that their benefits reach communities, in ways that respect local values and needs.”

Acknowledging the role of donors, he added: “I thank the many donors from the Ugandan community and beyond whose generosity is essential. Many among you are here today. Your commitment is vital. The ripple of change that begins here will expand beyond these gates, transforming lives not only individually but collectively – strengthening families, communities, and the nation.”

Calling the day a milestone for both Uganda and East Africa, the Aga Khan said: “This campus, the student residences, the ambulatory care facility – together with the commencement of the new Aga Khan University Hospital in Kampala – mark a turning point. These institutions will not only improve individual well-being but also catalyze the social and economic transformation that comes when education, health, research, and partnership work together.”

The Aga Khan concluded his address with gratitude: “Once again, I thank His Excellency the President, the Government of Uganda, and all those who have made this day possible. May this university and hospital serve as beacons of hope, opportunity, and excellence for Uganda and all of East Africa.”

Additional Background
• The new AKU campus in Nakawa replaces the university’s former location on Gaddafi Road, Old Kampala, following regulatory clearance in July.
• The Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala, once complete, will reduce the need for Ugandans to travel abroad for specialized care.
• New academic programmes expected from next year include: Bachelor of Education; Executive Master’s in Media Leadership and Innovation; Master of Education; Master of Science in Advanced Practice Midwifery; and Master of Arts in Digital Journalism.
• The Aga Khan Development Network is estimated to provide around US$60 million annually in assistance to Ugandans across sectors.

The occasion also marked the commencement of construction of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala – a landmark project set to transform healthcare in Uganda and the wider region.

“ I was pleased to commission the $23.8 million Aga Khan University in Nakawa and to break ground for the Aga Khan Teaching Hospital! I would like to thank His Highness the Aga Khan and the Aga Khan Development Agency for their invaluable investments in Uganda across all sectors of our economy.

In this joint venture, the government provided the land and we remain committed to enacting strong legislation that protects investors and helps create a robust private sector that boosts economic growth.

During the anti-colonial struggle, there was some confusion regarding the private sector. Some believed it was tied to colonial rule, leading to disruptions of the development of properties like those belonging to the Aga Khan during nationalization. However, we studied this situation and recognized it as a mistake. We have since restored our relationship with the private sector, including the Aga Khan, acknowledging their vital role in development.

Our brother, the late Aga Khan IV, whom I first learned about in my youth in Ntungamo, where Ismaili shops displayed his portraits as a young man, was recognized in 2017 for his exceptional contributions to the development of Uganda. Today, we also honor His Highness Aga Khan V and Princess Zahra for their service to our country.“ President

The Speech by President Museveni was exceptional, you could see not only a well informed person but his capacity of reasoning was exceptional. Not only Uganda but even countries of the Western World need a president of that caliber. I was impressed by his knowledge of very recent discovery in treatment of Malaria, Diabetes, Cancer etc... and his stand on the importance of the eficiency of traditional medecine. Equaly his understanding of the importance of the private-public sector partnership. It is heart-warming to see several good African leaders at this time, leaders that are bringing good governance to Africa.

Mawlana Hazar Imam was today conferred with the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa, Uganda’s highest civilian honour, by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for his distinguished services to the nation and his leadership in advancing social and economic development. Princess Zahra was also honoured with the Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa in recognition of her long-standing contributions to health, education and women’s empowerment.

Her Excellency the First Lady, the Honourable Janet Museveni, was also present at the ceremony along with Prince Aly Muhammad.

The award ceremony coincided with the official opening of the first phase of AKU’s 60-acre Kampala campus in Nakawa. Facilities include a seven-storey University Centre, a nine-storey student housing building accommodating 164 students, and a four-storey ambulatory care facility, the Nakawa Specialty Medical Centre. All three new buildings have received EDGE advanced certification for their energy efficiency.

At full capacity, the campus will host 100 faculty and 700 students, including Uganda’s first cohort of students in AKU’s new four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science programme, which begins later this month. This builds on the foundation of AKU’s nursing programmes that have graduated more than 1,500 Ugandan nurses through its earlier degree and diploma programmes.

“This investment in AKU’s new academic and student housing facilities, together with its hospital, embody the belief of our late father, which I share, that Ugandans deserve the very best access to international quality higher education and health care,” said Mawlana Hazar Imam. “The University’s campuses across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda create an integrated system to share knowledge and expertise, and allow the mobility of faculty and students across the region.”

Built on land generously provided by the Government of Uganda, construction has been made possible through the support of AKDN, generous donors, and funding from the German Government’s BMZ and KfW.

The Nakawa campus is among the most significant investments that AKU has made anywhere in its history. Equipped with the latest technology, the University Centre is designed to foster teamwork and inspiration through its well-lit open spaces, bursts of colour, and sweeping views; while the new Student Residence includes a gym, cafeteria, lounges and rooftop terrace to nurture friendships and wellness. Both the interior and exterior design reflect elements of Ugandan culture.

“Our journey in Kampala is just beginning,” said AKU President and Vice Chancellor Sulaiman Shahabuddin. “No matter how much AKU may evolve, this moment, today, will always hold a special place in its history. Every future achievement of the Aga Khan University in Uganda will be built upon the foundations laid here in Nakawa—by the visionaries, partners, and friends who made this dream a reality.”

Today also marked the commencement of construction of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala. The 101-bed teaching hospital will expand access to world-class care across nearly two dozen specialties and train the healthcare specialists the country urgently needs. Once complete, the hospital will form part of an integrated AKDN health and education system in East Africa.

“I look forward to our continued collaboration and partnership,” said First Lady Janet Museveni, “as we wait in anticipation for the University’s scholars to deepen our understanding of the causes of health and illness, making this not only a centre of excellence, but a place of intellectual discovery, research and innovation.”

AKU already operates four medical centres in Kampala, established in 2012, with a referral pathway to the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. More than 1,500 Ugandan nurses have graduated from AKU’s degree and diploma programmes, and a further 7,000 educators, health professionals, journalists and communicators have benefitted from its short courses and certificate programmes. Alumni today serve in leadership positions across Uganda’s health, education, media, and public sectors.
