2025, September 30:: El-Sisi welcomes Aga Khan chairman for development, cooperation talks
Ahram Online

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi welcomed on Tuesday Prince Rahim Aga Khan, chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), for talks on heritage restoration and cooperation in human development, education, and climate resilience in light of Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Luis Monreal, director general of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, President El-Sisi congratulated Prince Rahim on assuming leadership earlier this year and paid tribute to the late Prince Karim Aga Khan for his decades of stewardship of AKDN, Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said.

El-Sisi also praised AKDN’s global role in advancing social, economic, and environmental development, as well as its commitment to preserving Islamic cultural heritage.

He expressed Egypt’s appreciation for the AKDN’s long-standing contributions, which align with national initiatives under Vision 2030, such as the Decent Life programme, 100 Million Health, and Bidaya for Human Development

Talks also addressed urban renewal, neighbourhood rehabilitation, and restoration of historic landmarks, with El-Sisi welcoming broader AKDN cooperation in these areas, El-Shennawy added.

For his part, Prince Rahim Aga Khan thanked El-Sisi, praised Egypt’s regional and international standing, and expressed pride in making his first official visit to the country.

He affirmed AKDN’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Egypt and expanding support in education, agriculture, and climate adaptation, especially in Upper Egypt.

He also highlighted AKDN’s experience in urban and environmental revitalization, pioneered in Cairo, as a model for future projects.

He commended Egypt’s progress in human development, stressing that investing in people remains the cornerstone of prosperity and sustainable growth.

Prince Rahim Al-Husseini, now Aga Khan V, succeeded his father last February as the 50th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, which numbers between 12 and 15 million followers across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

His succession followed the death of Prince Karim Aga Khan IV in Lisbon after nearly seven decades of leadership.

AKDN has been active in Egypt for over 40 years, carrying out landmark projects that combine cultural preservation with community development.

Among its most notable achievements is Cairo’s Al-Azhar Park, which transformed a neglected landfill into one of the city’s largest green spaces.

The project also spurred the restoration of the surrounding Darb Al-Ahmar district, where AKDN rehabilitated historic monuments, upgraded housing, and introduced microfinance and training programmes.

The Aga Khan Trust for Culture has also supported projects in Aswan aimed at improving water supply, sanitation, and community infrastructure.

AKDN has promoted healthcare, education, and rural development programmes in Egypt, working with local communities and authorities.

These initiatives form part of AKDN’s broader mission across more than 30 countries, aimed at improving living conditions and opportunities for people of all faiths and backgrounds

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi held two high-level meetings on Tuesday at the Ittihadiya Palace — one with Prince Rahim Aga Khan, head of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), and another with Park Bum-ki, the special envoy of South Korea’s president — as Egypt seeks to deepen international partnerships in development and investment.

Presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy said Al-Sisi congratulated Prince Rahim on assuming his post earlier this year, commending AKDN’s global contributions to socio-economic development and the preservation of Islamic cultural heritage. He expressed appreciation for the network’s longstanding role in Egypt, particularly its work on sustainable development projects, urban regeneration, and the restoration of historical sites.

Talks also addressed major national initiatives such as the Decent Life rural development programme, the 100 Million Health campaign, and the Bidaya for Human Development initiative. The two sides explored new opportunities for cooperation in education, agriculture, and climate adaptation, especially in Upper Egypt, and discussed ways to leverage AKDN’s expertise in urban and environmental revitalisation.

Prince Rahim praised Egypt’s regional and international standing and reaffirmed the network’s commitment to expanding its work in the country, stressing that investment in human capital is fundamental to achieving sustainable growth and prosperity.

As Received:

When the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, received His Highness Imam Rahim Aga Khan during his recent visit to Egypt a few days ago, the Sheikh warmly welcomed him and said:

“Welcome to Cairo, the city built by your ancestor, the Fatimid Caliph Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah.
Welcome, O grandson of the Prophet, descendant of the Fatimids who founded Al-Azhar Mosque and University—the oldest university in the world, still standing tall and active for over a thousand years.”

He expressed his deep gratitude for His Highness’s generosity as Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network, and for all the remarkable humanitarian projects he has offered to Egypt. He added:
“This is not surprising coming from you and your noble family, of whom Al-Mutanabbi once said:

**‘Thus the Fatimids, generosity flows from their fingertips,
More enduring than the lines etched on palms and knuckles.’**

Meaning that generosity is inherent in them, just like the lines drawn on the palm and fingers.

For his part, Prince Rahim Aga Khan stated:
“I feel deeply honored to meet Your Eminence and to be granted this great opportunity. We are pleased that there are prospects for collaboration with Al-Azhar in all fields. We have a large development network working in the areas of culture, awareness, and education in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. Through several projects, we also work to promote awareness of the true, compassionate essence of Islam in many European countries.”
He added that all eyes are turned toward Al-Azhar, as it stands as a beacon of moderation and balance in the world.

Mawlana Hazar Imam crossed the finish line at the Chicago Marathon, one of the seven World Marathon Majors, on his birthday, Sunday 12 October 2025. He completed the 26.2 mile (42.2 km) course in just under five hours.

Mawlana Hazar Imam was delighted to see members of the Jamat participating in the marathon and asked that his warm congratulations be conveyed to them, as well as his appreciation for the support he received from Jamati members in the crowd.

In his recent Farmans, Hazar Imam encouraged the Jamat to stay active and take part in physical activity.

“Make some time to move every day and play sports when you can. Whatever your age, and however busy you are, everyone can make an effort to move more,” he said to the Jamat gathered for didar in Nairobi, Kenya. “This will be good for your physical and your mental health,” he added.

Alongside his many responsibilities, Hazar Imam himself makes time to enjoy surfing and distance running. He completed the Berlin Marathon in 2024.

The marathon is widely considered the pinnacle of endurance running. It is a test of physical stamina, mental fortitude, and strategic pacing; and requires weeks of rigorous training, nutrition planning, and recovery. Even so, distance running is accessible, with no special equipment or surface required. Major marathon events attract upwards of 50,000 entrants, featuring a mix of elite athletes and recreational runners alike.

Held every October, the Chicago Marathon is a highly anticipated event on the World Athletics calendar. The route begins at Grant Park, and weaves its way through the neighbourhoods of the city’s North Side, West Side and South Side, before returning to the centre of downtown Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Since being established in 1977, the race has steadily risen in popularity thanks to its flat course and local community support. Each year, runners are assisted by more than 12,000 volunteers at aid stations spread throughout the route. Last year, the event raised a record-breaking US $30m in support of over 200 national and global nonprofit organisations.
