WHAT IS THE OLDEST LANGUAGE IN THE WORLD

Post by swamidada786 »

What's the World's Oldest Language? | Scientific American

Historians and linguists generally agree that Sumerian, Akkadian and Egyptian are the oldest languages with a clear written record. All three are extinct, meaning they are no longer used and do not have any living descendants that can carry the language to the next generation.

Many historians and linguists believe that Sanskrit is among the oldest surviving languages in the world. Its origins date back more than 5,000 years, making it one of the earliest known languages of human civilization. Sanskrit is often regarded as the foundation of Indian culture, serving as the language of philosophy, science, poetry, and spirituality in ancient India.

The Vedas, composed between 1500 and 1200 BCE, are the earliest known Sanskrit texts and form the cornerstone of Hindu religious literature. These sacred scriptures — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda — were transmitted orally for centuries before being written down, preserving not only religious hymns but also knowledge of astronomy, medicine, and ethics.

Later texts such as the Upanishads, Mahabharata, Ramayana, and various Purāṇas further enriched Sanskrit literature, reflecting the evolution of Indian thought and tradition through different historical periods. While some Purāṇas were composed much later, the Vedic corpus remains among the oldest known literary works in human history.

Sanskrit’s precise grammar, codified by the ancient scholar Pāṇini in his masterpiece Ashtadhyayi, set a high standard for linguistic structure and influenced the development of many Indo-European languages. Even today, Sanskrit continues to be studied and chanted in temples, universities, and spiritual centers across the world — a testament to its enduring legacy and timeless wisdom.

Given its antiquity and continued influence, Sanskrit is often considered the oldest language, and India is sometimes regarded as the cradle of one of the world’s oldest civilizations. However, much more research and scholarly study are required to fully understand its origins and historical significance, as new discoveries continue to shed light on this remarkable heritage.

You wrote Vedas were composed in between 1500 and 1200 BCE and transmitted ORALLY before being written down.
Proof is recorded TEXTS.

BUT Sumerian and Akkadian two ancient languages of Mesopotamia, with Sumerian being the older of the two, first appearing around 3100 BC. Akkadian emerged later, with written records appearing around 2600 BC

We are talking about languages, and I am advocating for the Sanskrit language. As I mentioned in my earlier post, most historians and linguists believe that Sanskrit may be more than 5,000 years old.

Historical & Archaeological Evidence:

• The Sarasvati River mentioned in Vedic hymns has been traced through palaeochannel studies, showing it flowed between 3500–1000 BCE (ASI & IIRS findings).
• Scholars like Saroj Bala and Nilesh Oak use astronomy and archaeology to suggest the Mahabharata War may have occurred around 3100–5500 BCE.

From the Vedic hymns to the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Sanskrit has been the sacred and scholarly medium of Indian civilization — a language that carried the world’s earliest ideas of science, philosophy, and spiritualit

Let do not take Vedas as a source since it has been keep changing. The Hindu Vedas — Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda — were originally passed down orally for thousands of years before being written down. Because of this oral tradition, they naturally underwent minor linguistic, phonetic, and ritual variations over time, though their core content remained remarkably preserved.

Please read my first post again, I wrote,"Historians and linguists generally agree that Sumerian, Akkadian and Egyptian are the oldest languages with a clear written record".
Need clear written proof which Vedas or other Hindu literature does not have. You wrote,"Orally passed on", is not a standard or scientific proof. Scientific proof is in written form. Sunskrit was not in written form about 3000 years back.
Hindu mythology claim that Hinduism and Sunskrit existed since millions of years back!! Why not they developed Sunskrit alphabets millions years back just kept passing on orally.
