Lisbon Didar Dec 2025
Highlights for Youth

- Honoring the Founders:
MHI highlighted the courage and commitment of the pioneering generation—our grandparents—who relocated 50 years ago to begin a new life. There was a strong expression of pride in the success and positive impact they have achieved.
- A Call for Gratitude and Contribution: For the younger generation, who primarily know Portugal as their homeland, the message was one of profound gratitude. Their current wellbeing is a result of the foundation laid by their grandparents and the dedicated hard work of their parents. MHI encouraged active engagement and contributing back to the community, emphasizing that continued progress requires effort, not complacency.

🌹🌹 On 3 December, Mawlana Hazar Imam granted a didar for the Jamats of Portugal and Spain.

The Mukhi of Darkhana submitted bayʿa to the Imam on behalf of the Jamat, and President of the Ismaili Council Yasmin Bhudarally delivered a loyalty address.

In his Farman, Mawlana Hazar Imam expressed his concern about the President of Portugal’s ill health and said that he has extended best wishes for the President’s speedy recovery on behalf of the Jamat and his family.

Hazar Imam also informed the Jamat of his decision to reformat the merit-based undergraduate scholarship that is administered by Aga Khan Education Boards in selected countries by forgiving all outstanding loans and making the scholarship entirely grant based for current and future awardees. Hazar Imam explained that this is part of his desire to help remove the barriers to accessing quality higher education. The scholarship programme was established by Mawlana Shah Karim in the 1990s and has enabled thousands to access undergraduate degrees. Further details will be provided by the Education Boards in due course.

A gift was presented to Hazar Imam on behalf of the Jamat, consisting of two 19th century works on the Islamic architecture of Al-Andalus. The region of Al-Andalus in the Iberian Peninsula was home to diverse communities between the 8th and 13th centuries, and a place where different skills and ideas were seen as a source of strength.

The Islamic architectural heritage of al-Andalus includes iconic landmarks in the Spanish cities of Granada, Córdoba, and Seville, along with more recent discoveries in the Portuguese cities of Lisboa, Mértola, Silves, and Sintra.

Together, these texts—among the most significant publications documenting the historic architecture of the region—evoke a landscape that championed tolerance, creativity, and pluralism.

Later today, Hazar Imam will grant a youth mulaqat and meet with multi-faith family members.

On the second day of his visit to Portugal, Mawlana Hazar Imam granted a mulaqat to young people in the intimate setting of the Darkhana prayer hall.

Later, he addressed multifaith couples in the Great Hall. “I would like our community to treat non-Ismaili spouses the same way they treat Ismaili spouses, the same way they treat anyone as part of the family,” Hazar Imam stated. “I think we have an opportunity in this country, as a community—and this is also thanks to our spouses—to truly prosper. We have a responsibility to keep the country strong and also to serve this country.”

“Our faith is rooted in a set of values and principles, which include a code of conduct and behavior comprised of kindness, generosity, tolerance, helping those in need, service, and mutual care. I believe these values are universal. For Ismailis, living according to these ethical principles is an expression of our faith. Thus, although our specific practices, rituals, words, and prayers may differ, I believe that most faith communities share common values and principles and, in many cases, share stories and prophets, books, angels, and God. These are humanistic values.”

Raquel Fonseca, a member of a multifaith family, thanked Hazar Imam on behalf of the guests: “This visit brought us closer to the Ismaili Community,” she said.

“We are especially grateful for your spiritual leadership, which inspires our spouses, our children, and our families with values of service, integrity, and compassion. Your Highness, thank you for your vision, your generosity, and for welcoming us with genuine affection.”

Next, Hazar Imam admired an art installation entitled Journey Home, created by the Jamat of Portugal and Spain, made with sustainably sourced materials. The work depicts hundreds of water droplets, each with a handwritten message for the Imam, flowing towards a sculpted sea.

Inspired by Portugal's deep cultural connection to the sea, the installation celebrates water as a symbol of each murid's spiritual journey. Each drop follows a unique course, but all unite in the vast ocean—a metaphor for Allah, the source of sustenance and light.

As he left the Ismaili Center, young volunteers and medalists from the Jubilee Games gathered to bid him farewell. Later, Hazar Imam returned to the Center to meet with Jamat leaders at an institutional reception.

On the second day of his visit to Portugal, Mawlana Hazar Imam granted a youth mulaqat in the intimate setting of the Darkhana prayer hall.

He later addressed multifaith couples in the social hall. “I would like our community to treat non-Ismaili spouses the same as they treat Ismaili spouses, the same as they treat anyone as part of the family,” Hazar Imam said. “I think we have an opportunity in this country as a community—and that’s also thanks to our spouses—to really thrive. We have a responsibility to keep the country strong, to serve this country as well.”

“Our faith is rooted in a set of values and principles, which include a code of conduct and behaviour that comprise kindness, generosity, tolerance, helping those in need, service, looking after each other. “We are especially grateful for your spiritual leadership, which inspires our spouses, our children, and our families with values of service, integrity and compassion. Your Highness, thank you for your vision, your generosity, and for welcoming us with such heartfelt warmth.”

Hazar Imam then observed an art installation, titled Journey Home, that was co-created by the Portugal and Spain Jamats, out of sustainably-sourced materials. The artwork depicts hundreds of drops of water, each with a hand-written message to the Imam, flowing toward a sculpted sea.

Inspired by Portugal’s deep cultural connection to the sea, the installation celebrates water as a symbol of each murid’s spiritual journey. Each drop follows a unique voyage, yet all merge into the vast ocean—a metaphor for Allah, the source of nourishment and light.

As Hazar Imam departed the Ismaili Centre, young volunteers and Jubilee Games medal winners gathered to bid him farewell. Later in the afternoon, Hazar Imam returned to the Centre to meet with Jamati leaders at an institutional reception.

“Saudade do Noor” blends Ismaili devotion with the quiet emotional depth of Fado — shaped by a gentle longing for divinely-inspired guidance, a feeling that resonates with the spirit of saudade.

Fado is Portugal’s iconic traditional music: soulful, intimate, and often described as the sound of longing. At its heart is saudade, the uniquely Portuguese sense of deep, nostalgic yearning.

Message from the President of the Ismaili Council for Portugal

We are pleased to share the speech delivered today, December 12th, by the President of the Ismaili Council for Portugal, Yasmin Bhudarally. On behalf of the Ismaili Institutions, this speech conveys our gratitude and a brief reflection on the recent visit of Mawlana Hazar Imam to Portugal.

Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim

Dear sisters and brothers,

Ya Ali Madad.

Today, we gather in a moment of deep gratitude and joy. We have lived through days that will remain forever engraved in our collective memory: the Didar of Mawlana Hazar Imam. Mubarak to the entire Jamat!

This visit was truly unique and brought with it unexpected challenges. Every gesture, every hour of work, and every quiet effort contributed to ensuring that this moment was worthy of the blessing we received.

Over the course of these two days, we experienced moments of profound significance for our Jamat: the Didar for the entire Jamat, the Youth Mulaqat with our young people aged 15 to 25, and the Multifaith session that brought together Ismaili members and their non-Ismaili spouses. This last session took a different format from that adopted in other countries that have recently received the visit of Mawlana Hazar Imam, yet it preserved its essential purpose: to create an open and inclusive space for dialogue, where all members of our families feel welcomed and truly part of our community.

As part of the visit programme, an institutional reception was also held. During this session, Hazar Imam referred on several occasions to the work of the Jamat’s Institutions, in collaboration with the Institutions of the Imamat, as an essential path for the future. This vision reinforces the importance of our mission and our collective commitment.

I cannot conclude without expressing my deepest gratitude:

- To the volunteers, both uniformed and non-uniformed, who worked tirelessly before, during, and after the event — including those who stayed until the very last moment dismantling and organising everything, as well as those who continue working even now

- To the Jamat, for its exemplary collaboration and spirit of unity.

- To our donors, who responded to our appeal and contributed generously within such a short time frame. Your generosity made all of this possible. On behalf of the Institutions and the leadership, I extend our most sincere appreciation.

Dear brothers and sisters, this visit of Hazar Imam is not only a moment of happiness; it is also an invitation to our collective responsibility. As murids, it is upon us to renew our commitment to serve even more — with humility, excellence, and a spirit of unity. May each one of us be able to say: I will do more, I will go beyond in my institutional or voluntary service, and I will make my Imam happy.

Finally, we recognise that in an organisation carried out at such speed, there may have been shortcomings or moments of hurt. On behalf of the Institutions, I humbly apologise for any such shortcomings and appeal to the generosity of your hearts so that we may move forward with a spirit of understanding and forgiveness. May this Didar be a source of inspiration for us to strengthen our faith, renew our commitment, and deepen our unity as a Jamat.

It was with profound pride and gratitude that I observed that our beloved Imam left Lisbon happy. With a smile on his face, Hazar Imam departed at around 11 o’clock in the morning, under a blessed rain, carrying with him the memory of this very special visit.

Ya Ali Madad.

As received 👇

Ya Ali Madad everyone,

What happened in Lisbon is honestly unheard of. Everywhere else, Kenya, Uganda, Houston, Dallas the Jamat and leaders went above and beyond in welcoming our Imam. The arrivals were joyful, ceremonial, and full of honour. Mowla was visibly warm and engaged , giving heart signs, hugging children, asking for fist bumps and high fives.

But in Lisbon?

There was no proper welcome at all. No parade, no honour guard, not even a basic red carpet. This is especially surprising because every time Shah Karim visited Lisbon in the past, He was always received with full honour and dignity , not only during the Diamond Jubilee. Frequency of visits has never meant a reduction in respect.

The argument that “He has come many times, so no red carpet was needed” does not hold.
He visits Paris frequently as well , yet they still had the sense to lay out a red carpet. Repeated visits have never diminished protocol anywhere else.

Even the departure raised questions.
Yes, an umbrella was present when MHI first stepped out of the car. But when He and Prince Aly Muhammad moved forward to bid leaders goodbye, the umbrella was no longer over our Imam, while Prince Aly Muhammad continued to have one held over him. That clearly indicates it was drizzling. So the question naturally arises: why was our Imam left uncovered at that moment?

Some say, “What’s the big deal?” or “The Imam is the moon and the sun.” Of course He is. He is the one who protects us , He does not need protection.
But then why do we provide police escorts, security, motorcades, and controlled access?
For honour and respect.

That same principle applies here.

So where was the red carpet on arrival?
And where was the umbrella over Him at departure , as a gesture of dignity and love especially when one was held over Prince Aly Muhammad?

Even if, hypothetically, the Imam did not wish it, any murid would instinctively feel that our Beloved should not have even a single drop of rain fall on Him. That is not protocol, that is love.

Murids are understandably unsettled because they remember how consistently and respectfully the Imam has been welcomed in Lisbon and elsewhere over the years. This instance stood out precisely because it was different.

Respect isn’t about extravagance; it’s about consistency and priorities.
And it is only natural for murids to reflect when something breaks from what has always been the standard.

May we take this as a reminder that our Imam should always be received with the same dignity, love, and honour, regardless of how often He visits or where He goes.

Just a question: Where did the Imam come from and where did he depart to? Isn't Lisbon Mowlas residence?
