Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and His Excellency Mr Whit Fraser hosted a dinner for Mawlana Hazar Imam yesterday at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The dinner was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and several current and former leaders of the country.
As part of Hazar Imam’s first official visit to Canada, the event marked a milestone in the longstanding relationship between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat, grounded in shared values and a sustained commitment to building a better world.
Reflecting on the the partnership, Hazar Imam said: “My late father, who many of you knew well, had a strong belief in—and affection for—Canada, for its people, its values, its steadfast commitment to upholding the fundamental principles of respect, dignity, and pluralism. It is my intention to continue to strengthen and build on this valued relationship and to make available all of the capabilities of the Imamat in our work together.”
Over five decades, this partnership has produced tangible outcomes in capacity building, economic development and the strengthening of civil society across some of the world’s most challenging environments.
“Many of the guests gathered here tonight have dedicated their lives to pluralism and peace. So too has the Ismaili community in Canada,” said Governor General Mary Simon. “In today’s global context, your work—and the values we share—stand as a stabilizing force. For this, and for our continued partnership and friendship, we thank you.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Carney and Hazar Imam released a joint declaration outlining new partnerships in housing, economic development and other areas of mutual interest, setting the stage for renewed collaboration.

Yesterday, His Highness the Aga Khan began his first official visit to Canada, marking a milestone in a relationship between the Imamat and Canada that spans more than five decades. His Highness met with Prime Minister Mark Carney and was hosted at dinner by Governor General Mary Simon and His Excellency Whit Fraser. His Highness also met today with Senators and Members of Parliament at the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat.
Prime Minister Carney and His Highness released a joint declaration outlining new partnerships in housing, economic development and other areas of mutual interest, setting the stage for renewed collaboration.
During substantive discussions with Prime Minister Carney, three priority areas were advanced.
First, affordable housing. Prime Minister Carney welcomed investments by the Ismaili Imamat in multi-generational not-for-profit housing projects across Canada. Through Build Canada Homes, the Government of Canada will also forge a long-term partnership with the Ismaili Imamat to develop low- and middle-income housing projects.
Second, development collaboration. The leaders announced the creation of an Economic Partnership Platform to strengthen development financing. FinDev Canada and the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development will pool public and private capital to invest in infrastructure, renewable energy and agriculture across Africa and Asia. Prime Minister Carney and His Highness also committed to ongoing joint development programming in economic opportunity, health, education and pluralism, including in critical regions such as Syria. Opportunities were identified in skills development, energy, and leveraging Canadian innovations and technology in sectors such as agriculture and climate.
Third, principled global diplomacy. Recognising the urgent need for quiet, principled diplomacy to save lives, end conflict, and preserve human dignity, the Imamat and Canada renewed their commitment to work together towards these goals.
His Highness underscored the importance of new forms of partnership and reaffirmed the readiness of the Imamat, AKDN, and the Canadian Ismaili community and its institutions to serve as reliable partners.

Re: Eastern Canada Deedar and visit March 25-31
As received:
My summary of March 26th 2026 Youth Mulaqat Farman
Hazar Imam started his farman in French, expressing great pride in the Ismaili youth in Canada. He mentioned that, over the course of the last day and a half, he'd heard only positive things about the way the Ismaili youth contribute to Canadian society and are a valuable part of it. He then reaffirmed how he is always watching over us caringly, and how we can draw strength from the connection with our Imam.
Then, switching to English, Hazar Imam gave du'a to the youth attending, as well as to those who could not make it. Hazar Imam also focused on all persons living in difficulty and hardship, giving du'a for peace and dignity for everyone around the world, insisting on his personal wish for peace. He reminded us that he is always with us, in the good times and in the difficult times, that we can turn to the Imam in hardships, in moments of struggle, and in moments of happiness.
Next, Hazar Imam explained that he'd give a few guiding principles to reflect on and carry forward to find purpose in our lives. First, Hazar Imam outlined that we are each unique, and each have different talents we bring to the table. He insisted that Allah has laid a path for each of us. He advised that prayer is a dialogue, and to pray with openness to receive the guidance towards this path.
Hazar Imam also stressed that we should make time for quiet reflection, that it will keep us grounded. He outlined that forming this habit young will allow it to last a lifetime. He placed importance on following his farmans, to use our Aql ethically, and to live our lives with faith, to live our lives with awareness.
The second point is in education and the workforce. Hazar Imam highlighted that it is our responsibility to do our best to fulfill our potential, to keep in mind that education never ends, to keep developing skills and picking up new ones. He also put forward four questions we should ask ourselves before taking on a career path:
- Firstly, is this work ethical? Hazar Imam said that if it goes against the values of our faith, this work is not for you.
- Secondly, is there a future in this work? Hazar Imam advised that many jobs are prone to being replaced by artificial intelligence in the coming years, so we should stay on the human side of things.
- Thirdly, can you make a living from this work? Hazar Imam stressed that we should choose a career path that will allow us to live in dignity with proper quality of life. He warned that we should not choose a career path that would make us a burden on our families & on society.
- Finally, do you enjoy this work? Hazar Imam highlighted that if you enjoy your work, you can put more into it, and get more out of it, and that the jamat's joy is his joy.
Hazar Imam capped off this second point reminding us to be aware of our gifts and of the path we are walking on, to make sure that it is a path on which we can be proud of ourselves. Hazar Imam prays for our success and reminded that success is a product of our own efforts and of the blessings of Allah. He reminded us to take our successes with humility, and warned us to not get caught up in Man's hubris.
The third point is to take care of our bodies. Hazar Imam put importance on having respect for our body, our mind and all of Creation. Hazar Imam advised to not partake in activities that are harmful for our bodies. He warned that some things that are deemed lawful by your governments are not good for you. Hazar Imam gave guidance that it is not worthwhile to harm our bodies in the long term to fit in or to impress anyone.
Hazar Imam also highlighted that Canada has a rich culture in regards to sports and encouraged us to get involved in sports. But also he said it does not need to through team sports, it can also be some other physical activity or exercise, and that this will also benefit our mental health. Hazar Imam specifically asked for this to be included in our regular routine, to make it regular Now.
Hazar Imam synthesized these three points by outlining how they are three distinct but not independent vectors that we should consider in considering our purpose in life. He also highlighted the value of the tradition of service we have within the jamat, and how living with the value of service is living your faith. He clarified that service isn't just overt or grand acts, that service can be in a smile, in a small gesture to make someone's day slightly better, in cleaning up at home, in doing something for someone else, in actions that are taken with light in our hearts. Hazar Imam also indicated that embodying the value of service will protect us from individualism & excessive materialism, and that in service, we can find connection, as well as find meaning in our existence.
Upon departure, Hazar Imam urged us to understand all the farmans he's made to youth, that if we do not have them, we should seek them out and understand them. He also told us we will be receiving a tasbih from him, and that we should use it for daily remembrance, and that it will remind us of our nearness with the Imam. He reminded us that laughter, joy, happiness are also ethics of our faith and that we should have light in our hearts. Hazar Imam also acknowledged that many youth travelled far to come to the Mulaqat and expressed gratitude; he ended his farman hoping to see us tomorrow.

Earlier today, Mawlana Hazar Imam participated in a groundbreaking ceremony of the Laval Jamatkhana, a new space that will serve the Ismaili Jamat and broader community in Greater Montreal. The event brought together local community and civic leaders to mark the start of construction on a project years in the making.
The Laval Jamatkhana is designed as a net-zero community centre and congregation hub, developed in consultation with the City of Laval, local residents, and community stakeholders. It will house space for cultural programming, indoor athletics, performing arts, and civic dialogue.
Built using mass-timber construction and Passive House design principles, the facility is intended to achieve net-zero energy performance and to support biodiversity through its landscaping. The project will transform what was previously a vacant site into a sustainable community landmark.
Within Canada, Québec is home to a large Ismaili population, many of whom arrived in the 1970s. Over the past five decades, the community has become a familiar part of Canadian civic life — in business, public service, and the arts. In Laval specifically, that presence has continued to expand, making the case for a dedicated facility both practical and timely.
“Today, the Ismaili community in Québec is actively engaged across all areas of society,” said Nilab Ferooz, President of the Ismaili Council for Québec and the Maritimes. “Our community contributes meaningfully to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of this province. We are proud to count among us entrepreneurs, educators, health professionals, public servants, and deeply engaged citizens.”
Laval Jamatkhana will serve as a place of gathering and spiritual reflection for Ismailis. But the broader development is open to all. Community programming, cultural events, and dialogue initiatives are planned to be accessible and inclusive, welcoming residents from across Laval. The aim is to build something that belongs to the neighbourhood as much as to the community that built it.
“Today, we are not merely laying a cornerstone or pouring concrete. We are building a bridge between cultures and generations,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Finance and National Revenue. “This is an ambitious project that embodies what the Ismaili community has brought to Québec and Canada for more than fifty years: inclusion, innovation, service, and pluralism.”
In attendance were national and provincial leaders of the Jamat, volunteers, and supporters. In his remarks, Mawlana Hazar Imam thanked them for the project’s progress thus far and looked forward to its completion.
“I’m grateful to all of you,” he said, “for doing what our community is supposed to do, which is to enrich, and to serve, and to help make colourful the societies in which we live.”

This week I had the pleasure of meeting His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V in my capacity as PS to the Minister of Finance.
The spiritual leader of the global Ismaili Muslim community (12-15 million people worldwide) and a leading voice in international development.
It was meaningful moment to reflect on the strength of Canada’s partnership with the Ismaili Imamat, and the real impact of that relationship, from advancing affordable housing here at home to supporting sustainable economic development globally.

26 March 2026 Montreal Student Mulakat
Narrated By student Kamadiani
Family,
I just got back home. It was such a beautiful and powerful experience and so I wanted to share my journey with you all so after the in our program we went to the entrance of the hall to greet Hazar Imam and as soon as he walked in even though he was metres away you can feel his presence and you can feel the Noor in the light as if he was right in front of you.
It was so powerful and then he came up in front of us and he shook our hands and he blessed us by putting his hand on her shoulders and he told us bonjour Como Sava, which means hello how are you in French and
then he even apologised for arriving a little bit late and then he asked us if we were ready and
then we entered the hall so we made our way to the front of the stage he climbed the steps and then before even sitting on his chair he invited us to get on the stage so we went up the steps and we bowed down to him and then we took our respective spots next to his chair.
Ceremonies started with the recitation of Qaseeda and then it was of Ginan and he blessed every single reciter and he really took the time to meet every Reciter he thanked each and every one of them for reciting he said I’m proud of you and he gave blessings to each and every one of them and then he went to do convey his Fairmont and in his Fairmont he talked about all the important subjects he talked about education
he talked about the importance of education and the importance of finding a sustainable job that also makes us very happy.
He also talked about the importance of volunteering and staying healthy and Iexercising he encouraged us to go on a run every day and
after the Farman we had to present Mehmani we stood up and we took the Mehmani and then 2 x 2 we prevented it so I was with my mukhiani when we presented it he said hello to us again and he bless us. He said I send blessings to you and to your family and to your loved ones, he said he’s proud of us and he thanked us for doing this and after that we sat back down and the other MKS of the other JamatKhanas presented their mehmanirs and he really again took the time to meet everyone he said hi how are you? To The Jamat that come from Francophone cities he spoke in French and also in his Farman he started a bit in French as well, which was very, very interesting and beautiful again and so after the presentation of mehmanies he did his departing Farman and he thanked everyone he gave many many blessings to us to the Jamat and to our family he also made a special mention to all the MKS that presented mehmani as he accepted our mehmanies and when he did that he also looked at us directly which was so beautiful again and after that after his Farman , he turned back to us.
He asked us if we were ready and then we exited the stage we took the other side so he really got the chance to see everyone and then before exiting the hall he stopped in front of the individuals with special needs and he took the time to greet every single one of them to bless every single one of them and once that was done, he came back to us and he said in French sorry for the little detour and then we exited the hall when we exited the hall us the MK we had to go on the same place that we received the Imam but the he kept on walking and we were a little bit sad we thought that maybe the Imam wasn’t gonna turn around but then he realised that we were not behind him and so even though the President was talking to him, he respectfully cut him off and came back to us to say bye he shook our hands he blessed us again and then
he stopped in front of me and my Muni Emaar and he looked at us and he said was it a long drive?
You know he was trying to make a little conversation and then me and my Mukhiani while we were a little bit shocked we looked at each other and then we looked back at Hazar Imam and we said no no not really and then he did a motion with his hands which was like 50/50 Khanji Khalsa we said not really and he laughed and his smile was just incredible like it was just beautiful and
then he said goodbye to us and he left the hall when he exited we went back into the hall and we sat at the steps during the Shukhrana Tasbih , and then he exited the building and we just kept on reciting the Shukhrana Tasbih , and it was just so beautiful.
Imam really took the time to meet everyone and it was just such impactful moments and I am so blessed
