Mawlana Hazar Imam today concluded a visit to Qatar, where he met with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and His Excellency Sheikh Thani bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Fund for Development, to strengthen collaboration in global development and culture. Hazar Imam was accompanied by Prince Aly Muhammad.

Two agreements were signed during the visit: a Memorandum of Understanding between the Aga Khan Development Network and the Qatar Fund for Development that aims to advance inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in support of countries facing urgent and multifaceted challenges; and a collaboration agreement between the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the Qatar Museums.

The agreements will enable deeper collaboration in regions of common interest, including Central and South Asia and the Middle East, in fields such as economic empowerment, healthcare, climate resilience, education, training for heritage preservation, urban revitalisation, and music.

The visit continues the enduring engagement of the Ismaili Imamat with countries in the Gulf region, including the State of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and the Sultanate of Oman. Collaboration with institutions based in Qatar had begun in 2010 when Mawlana Shah Karim visited Doha at the conclusion of the 11th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

AKDN participates in Paris Nutrition for Growth Summit

France · 27 March 2025 ·

Paris, France, 27 March 2025 – Malnutrition is one of the greatest threats to human development. It affects millions worldwide, particularly in regions facing poverty, conflict and the harshest effects of climate change – areas where the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is actively engaged. This week, AKDN is joining world leaders, policymakers and civil society organisations at the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit to accelerate action and mobilise financing for nutrition, a critical driver of human and economic development.

Hosted by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the N4G Steering Group and the Paris Peace Forum – of which AKDN is a founding partner – the Summit is taking place on 27-28 March, following a 20-year tradition of being organised by the host country of the most recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

President Emmanuel Macron hosted the gathering, where stakeholders committed to $27 billion in funding to tackle malnutrition. His Highness the Aga Khan attended a high-level event on 27 March hosted by President Macron, reaffirming AKDN’s commitment to advancing nutrition and food security. Watch President Macron’s speech.

The Summit is focused on three core areas essential to improving global nutrition: health and social protection, the transition to sustainable food systems, and the role of nutrition in building resilience in crises. It is also galvanising action on gender equality, data and innovation, and finance and accountability.

As part of its longstanding commitment to addressing malnutrition through integrated, multisectoral approaches, AKDN has committed $45 million to nutrition and food systems.

High-level side events earlier in the week explored strategies to embed nutrition into broader development efforts, close the $13 billion annual funding gap, and set measurable national targets. AKDN representatives contributed to key discussions, including:

March 24: A session on “Immunisation-Nutrition-Integration: Strengthening Health Systems for Sustainable Impact”, featuring Dr Aminah Jahangir (Regional Advisor, Health and Nutrition, Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan) alongside GAVI, Power of Nutrition and Results UK. Dr Jahangir shared results from AKDN’s integrated approach in northern Pakistan, where efforts have helped raise full immunisation coverage among children to 96 percent – well above the national average of 74 percent – and significantly reduce stunting rates to 18 percent (compared to the national average of 44 percent). Building on this model, AKDN has expanded efforts to underserved districts where immunisation rates were as low as 18 percent and acute malnutrition topped 25 percent.

March 27: A side event hosted by the OECD and Stronger Foundations for Nutrition, where Matt Reed (CEO, Aga Khan Foundation UK) moderated a panel on philanthropic action for nutrition.

AKDN’s participation at N4G 2025 underscores its commitment to improving nutrition outcomes and addressing food insecurity as part of its broader work in climate resilience and sustainable development.

Nice, France, 9 June 2025 – His Highness the Aga Khan joined Heads of State and government leaders from around the world for the launch of the third UN Oceans Conference, which was hosted by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in Nice.

Under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” the conference aims to support further and urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. This is in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – specifically SDG 14, which states: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”

The conference brings together over 60 countries as well as intergovernmental organisations, international financial institutions, NGOs, civil society organisations, academic institutions and other actors committed to supporting the oceans.

The Ismaili Imamat and its institutions work closely with France in multiple areas of activity, and AKDN is a Knowledge Partner of the Conference. Drawing on decades of experience in supporting coastal communities, the Aga Khan Foundation is implementing the Indian Ocean Coastal Regeneration Initiative in India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan and Tanzania, to strengthen the livelihoods of millions of coastal residents and protect and restore 100,000 hectares of coastal ecosystems.

His Highness the Aga Khan said, “We have a shared responsibility to care for our oceans, which cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface. As part of the fight against climate change, our institutions are helping to ensure the protection of these precious natural resources.”

Prince Hussain Aga Khan, His Highness’s younger brother and an avid conservationist with a life-long commitment to protecting wildlife, was also present. A collection of his stunning underwater photographs is being exhibited in Nice during UNOC. “It was an honour for me to have my photographs displayed at UNOC and to join my brother and the AKDN Delegation as well as conservation partners gathered to try to solve the biggest problems facing the oceans today,” commented Prince Hussain.
