After the DARBAR

You are my inspiration

You are my aspiration

You are my destiny

You are my satisfaction

You are my ambition

You are my determination

You are my will

You are my articulation

You are my initiation

You are my completion

You are my pinnacle

You are my culmination

You are my submission

You are my elevation

You are my challenge

You are my examination

You are my palpitation

You are my supplication

You are my worship

You are my anticipation

Closer than you think..

My spiritual children,
Tears in their eyes as I arrive,
My beloved jamat,
From which the salwaats come alive,
All of them waiting,
My murids side by side,
As I am robed and I enter,
The silence subsides
The voices are rising,
Many more than one alone,
So many hearts beating,
As I ascend to my throne
And I am filled with happiness,
The Didar has begun,
As I glance over my jamat;
I feel we are one.

Then my heart skips a beat,
As I hear my young murids cry,
Because I too,
Have a tear in my eye -
But that not of sadness,
They are tears with a smile,
For the moment in which I am present,
I have waited for such a long while
My murids too have yearned for me,
As I have longed to be with them,
And on such an occasion,
Who can pretend?

Who can say that they did not feel?
Who can claim that this love is not real?
I for one cannot say these things;
As I feel in my being what happiness brings,
And when I hear my murids as they all sing,
I am certain that there is no sweeter thing.

The beautiful hall,
Decorated for Darbar,
Dancing with sparkle,
That glitters from far
Surrounded by these great works of art,
That I know have been sculpted pure from the heart..
And when my murids present me,
With the best that best can be,
There is a smile on my face:
‘Is this all for me?’

I give you all my blessings,
For you mean the world to me,
You could do none of this,
And your emotions I would still see,
As I do not need a dozen roses
And a glamorous hall
To know that my jamat,
Loves me with their all.
As the Imam I know what is in your soul,
I can see into your hearts and that is my role.
I bless each one of you individually as I stand
As if upon your shoulder is my hand.

When my spiritual children cry,
I am crying with you
When my jamat is smiling,
I am smiling too
When you love me ineffably,
I also love you so true,
And wherever you are walking
I am walking with you.
When you are laughing,
I am laughing along too,
When you sit awaiting my arrival,
I am already sitting with you
And if ever there is a time of doubt,
That you are going through,
Remember you could never love the Imam;
As much as he loves you.

So I take my leave now back through the hall,
Across the red carpet which between my murids fall,
I look left and right, smiling all the way,
At all my children, you’ve made my day
Just by listening to my guidance
And giving me your heart,
Now remember though I’m leaving,
We are nowhere near apart.
For you are always in my prayers, and in my mind,
Look within, and my voice you will find;
Still guiding and loving in every way,
Reminding you that there is not a single day;
Where you are not in my every thought,
I do hope you take with you all that I have taught,
And if ever your Imam you cannot physically see,
Take your tasbih and call Ya Ali.

Whether you can feel my presence or not,
Remember that I am there,
With each breath that you take,
I am in that air..
And if you ever feel I am absent one day;
Remind yourself I am one zikar away,
Let your soul soar,
The noor will flow free,
Between my murids,
In both you and me,
Surely then, my light you will see,
When you ‘take your tasbih,
Take your tasbih…’

So as I leave this hall,
Wipe those tears from your eyes,
I want you to smile,
And realise;
That in body your Imam may be gone,
But in my heart your salwaats live on.
My spiritual children must know,
When I go they must see,
I am going but also taking;
All of them with me.
Never assume, that I do not care,
Again; take your tasbih, and I am there.

I pray you are left with all the joy,
That this Golden Jubilee brings,
And I convey to all my children,
My best loving blessings.
Now next time you feel my absence,
And your heart begins to sink,
Take your tasbih and remember,
I am closer than you think…

O, just one word from Shams, and I’d gladly give my life

O whispering breeze,
bring the news of my beloved Shams.
It would be worth more
than all the amber and musk
from China to Constantinople.

Please tell me if you’ve heard a word
from his sweet lips,
or a beat of his pounding heart.

O, just one word from Shams,
and I’d gladly give my life.

His love is before me and behind me;
Through his love
my heart has become pure,
my breast has imbibed every virtue.

One smell of his perfume
and I walk light-headed on this path.
O Saaqi, enough with your wine –
I am drunk on the wine from his cup!
My nose is so full of his fragrance
that I have no need for incense, musk,
or the fine amber of Mongolia.

Shamsuddin is forever alive in my heart.
Shamsuddin is the generosity of every soul.
Shamsuddin is poverty,
Shamsuddin is the purest of all wealth.

I am not the only one
singing, Shamsuddin, Shamsuddin –
The nightingales sing from the garden,
And the partridge from the mountainside.

The beauty of a starry night is Shamsuddin.
The Garden of Paradise is Shamsuddin.
Love, compassion, and gratitude are Shamsuddin.

Shamsuddin is the brightness of day,
Shamsuddin is the turning sky,
Shamsuddin is time everlasting,
Shamsuddin is the endless treasure.

Shamsuddin is the King of Cups,
Shamsuddin is the ocean of nectar.
Shamsuddin is the breath of Jesus,
Shamsuddin is the face of Joseph.

O God, show me that inner place,
where we can sit together,
Shams in the middle, my soul by his side.

Shamsuddin is sweeter than life,
Shamsuddin is an earth full of sugar,
Shamsuddin is the towering cypress,
Shamsuddin is the flowering Spring.

Shamsuddin is the well of clear water,
Shamsuddin is the harp and rubaab,
Shamsuddin is the barrel of wine,
Shamsuddin is the bliss of my soul.

O Shams, you are the hope of every heart,
the one every lover longs to hear.
O Shams, come back, alas,
Don’t leave my soul in ruins.

The Day of all Days”
By: Khayal ‘Aly
Composed on Imamat Day, July 11t h 2004

Inspired by
“Ya Ali Khub Majalas”

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
we recite this munajat for our Sahib.

We submit to Thee in recognition of Thy glory,
having reflected upon the lesson in Hazrat Adam’s story.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Heavenly Throne;
only to a blessed few is this Divine Reality known.

O ‘Ali, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
we pledge allegiance to our Sahib.

Our forefathers gave their hands to Nabi;
God accepted and led their hands to ‘Ali.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Baytullah;
lit by the command of Sultan Muhammad Shah.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
we have come for the didar of our Sahib.

We sacrifice our lives for a glimpse of Thy Face;
in humble supplication do we ask for Thy Grace.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Spirit of Perfection;
breathing life into our souls with love and affection.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
We perform the dhikr given by our Sahib.

When the angels in Heaven learnt Thy Name,
they fell to the earth blushing with shame.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the “Hidden Treasure”;
recognition of which, is the Supreme Pleasure.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
We recite Salawaat upon our Sahib.

In 1957 on the eleventh of July,
we didn’t know whether to sing or cry.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Imamim Mubeen;
shower us with Thy blessings Ya Rahmatan lil-‘alameen.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
We shed tears of love for our Sahib.

You are the beloved of Fatimataz-Zorah;
the Living Qur’an, Injil, Zabur and Torah.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Prophet’s kin;
He who loves us more than we can ever love him.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
We attend the majlis held for our Sahib.

We perform ‘ibadat as we were created to do,
man ‘arafa nafsahu faqad ‘arafa rabbahu.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Supreme Name,
to reach the asal makaan is every murid’s aim.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing Thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

Ya ‘Aly, Ya Mazhar al-Ajaib,
We end this munajat for our Sahib.

The Jamat has gathered on this Imamat Day;
brothers and sisters with one heart do we pray.

Our Lord Shah Karim is himself the Dar as-Salam;
enter by His Farman, and obey the Mawla’s Kalam.

O ‘Aly, our hearts desire is to sing thy praise;
Blessed be today, the Day of all days...

And hold fast,
All together, by the Rope
Which God (stretches out
For You), and be not divided
Among yourselves;
For ye were enemies
And He joined your hearts
In love. So that by His Grace,
Ye became brethren;
Of the Pit of Fire,
And He saved you from it.
Thus doth God make
His signs clear to you:
That ye may be guided.

Allah is the Light
Of the heavens and the earth.
The parable of His Light
Is as if there were a Niche
And within it a Lamp:
The Lamp enclosed in a Glass:
The glass as it were
A brilliant star:
Lit from a blessed Tree
An Olive neither of the East
Nor the West
Whose Oil is well-nigh
Luminous,
Though fire scarce touched it:
Light upon Light!
Allah doth guide
Whom He will
To His Light.

“ As we work towards … the future we will
remember the Sura of Light from the Qur’an.
It tells us that the oil of the blessed olive tree
lights the lamp of understanding, a light that
belongs neither to the East nor West. We are
to give this light to all. In that spirit, all that
we learn will belong to the world and that….
is part of the vision I share with you.”

The Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him and his Ahl al-Bayt) declared at Ghadir Khumm by holding up the hand of Imam Ali (a.s):

“He of whomever I am the Master-Lord (Mowla), Ali is his Master-Lord (Mowla). O Allah, befriend whosoever befriends him and be the enemy of whosoever is hostile to him.”

Hadith of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him and his Ahl al-Bayt) at Ghadir Khumm:

"O People! Don't you know that I have more authority upon you than yourself? O Folk! Do I not have more right over the believers than what they have over themselves? O People! Surely God is my Master, and I am the master of all believers. Whoever I am his mawla (master), Ali is his mawla (master). Whoever I am his mawla (master), Ali is his mawla (master). Whoever I am his mawla (master), Ali is his mawla (master). O Allah! Befriend those who befriend him. Be hostile to those who are hostile to him. Help those who help him. Forsake those who forsake him. And keep the truth with him wherever he turns (i.e., make him the axis of the truth). Ali, the son of Abu Talib, is my brother, my executor (Wasi), and my successor (Caliph), and the leader (Imam) after me. His position to me is the same as the position of Aaron to Moses, except that there shall be no prophet after me. He is your master after Allah and His Messenger. O Folk! Verily Allah has appointed him to be your Imam and ruler. Obedience of him is obligatory for all Immigrants (Muhajirin) and Helpers (Ansar) and those who follow them in virtue, and on the dwellers of the cities and the nomads, the Arabs and the non-Arabs, the freeman and the slave, the young and the old, the great and the small, the white and the black. His commands should be obeyed, and his word is binding and his order is obligatory on everyone who believes in one God. Cursed is the man who disobeys him, and blessed is the one who follows him, and he who believes in him is a true believer. His leadership (Wilayah) has been made obligatory by Allah, the Powerful, the Exalted. O Folk! Study the Quran. Reflect on its clear verses and do not presume the meaning of the ambiguous verses. For, by Allah, nobody can properly explain them to you its warnings and its meanings except me and this man (i.e., Ali) whose hand I am lifting up in front of myself. O People! This is the last time that I shall stand in this assembly. Therefore listen to me and obey and submit to the command of Lord. Verily Allah, He is your Lord and God. After Him, His prophet, Muhammad who is addressing you, is your master. Then after me, this Ali is your master and your leader (Imam) according to Allah's command. Then after him leadership will continue through some selected individuals in my descendants till the day you meet Allah and His Prophet. Behold! Certainly you shall meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. Beware! Do not become infidels after me by striking the necks of one another. Lo! It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform what I said to those who are absent for perhaps the informed one might comprehend it (understand it) better than some of the present audience. Behold! Haven't I conveyed the Message of Allah to you? Behold! Haven't I conveyed the Message of Allah to you? O God! Bear witness."

(O Prophet) Verily, those who give you their allegiance, they give it but to Allah (Himself); Allah's hand is upon their hands. Then he who breaks it, certainly breaks it against himself. And he who fulfills what he has pledged with Allah, He shall in return reward him in plenty.
