In Need of a Local Psychiatrist

Post by Smile123 »

Yam,

I am in need of a psychiatrist that speaks Hindi/Urdu/ or Gujarti. The location of the psychiatrist has to be near Houston, TX. It can be anywhere in Houston, Sugar Land, or Stafford. My cousin's family is willing to travel 30 miles for a psychiatrist. I looked one up on google but only found one and I hoping to find more, because a second opinion will be needed. If there are Ismaili psychiatrist that anyone knows of or any psychiatrist that speaks the languages mentioned, please let me know with their contact information.
Also, are there any suggestions (spiritual, family support, etc.) on what to do with a mentally ill patient. My cousin may be schizophrenic, and we are worried for her.

Thank you.

Ya Ali Madad Smile123,

I came across your post today and thought that I will try to give you
a reply, although I am in no position to recommend anyone to you
partly due to Geographical aspect and partly due to the following.

First of all you must be very certain that your cousin IS mentally ill.
Your cousin is, maybe, just depressed and perhaps he/she is being pushed
into reacting with anger, aggression or similar manner due to nagging
by the family and friends around him/her.

The other thing is, that it is extremely important that you take him/her
to a medical doctor or a HOSPITAL in your local area, and follow
their recommendations.

Please DO NOT ASSUME anything about the sickness until after thorough
check-up has been done and an assessment made by an expert. I am
sure you will be guided to the right direction by a Doctor or Hospital
staff in your area.

Many people who are schizophrenic can work and exist quite normally
within the society if they are taken care of, and if they take their
medication regularly.
Now, this if the person IS really suffering from schizofrenia.

There was a very good (American) documentary about a lawyer suffering
from schizofrenia who practised his proffession with the help from his wife
who saw to it that he took his medication regularly. That is extremely
important. Alas, there are side-effects. But after trying for a while one
can find a suitable medicine to minimise the side effects.

The other thing is that Schizofrenic people need care and not bickering,
or telling off etc. Remember, it is an illness.
They are not that by choice.
It is a tragic situation for anyone to end up with a mental illness
and it is a tragedy for the family of the person and also for the other
loved ones.

Those around them need to have patience, and also have to follow
the instructions of the experts involved.
It is very difficult, but what isn't?

So my advice is, first of all, take very good care of you cousin.
Make sure you take the first step taking him/her to a doctor.
Make sure that a correct diagnosis is made and find out
exactly what illness he/she is suffering from.
Then follow the advice of the doctor and seek the help of an
expert. GUESSING IS THE WORSE THING TO DO.

If your cousin is a teenager then it may also be something
related to the persons puberty, hormon balance etc.,
while they are stepping into adulthood.

Teenagers have (practically) a WAR going on in their BODY
both physically and mentally. And some may have more
difficulties in handling that, which can result in different
reactions.
Some aggressive or even depressive.
A simple row or a separation from a boyfriend/girlsfriend
or a row with a best friend or a family member can trigger
such things. One never knows.

So, please TAKE your COUSIN to see a DOCTOR and eventually
a specialist in order to establish what the illness is.
I am sure there are some Asian Medical Doctors in your area.
I hope that they will guide you to a specialist if necessary.

Please note that I am neither a Doctor NOR an Expert, but I have
dealt with and lived among several people who are schizofrenic
and/or suffering from manic depression and/or bi-polarity.

Believe me it is NOT EASY to cope with this kind of situation
but one has to be absolutely patient and also be very
understanding, diplomatic (so to say) and caring.

I wish you all the best, and my prayers are with your
cousin, you and your families.

May Mowla Bless YOU, Amen.
