Canada World Partnership Walk celebrates its 30th anniversary!
Canada-wide effort to fight global poverty

TORONTO, May 21, 2014 /CNW/ - For the past eight weeks thousands of amazing Torontonians, from all walks of life, have united in taking steps to fight global poverty. On Sunday, May 25th at Metro Hall, David Pecaut Square they will join cities across Canada in the 30th anniversary World Partnership Walk to increase awareness and celebrate their efforts.

"I'm so proud of how far we've come. For 30 years, our participants, volunteers and donors have made a significant contribution to the fight against poverty," said Fiaz Basaria, Convenor for the World Partnership Walk in Toronto. "The Walk is a real way for Canadians to spark hope in communities in some of the poorest parts of the world. Today we celebrate our efforts to help people across the globe to reach their full potential and to live with dignity."

An initiative of Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC), the Walk attracts tens of thousands of Canadians every year united in a common effort to bring hope and renewal to poor communities living in Asia and Africa.

Last year nearly 40,000 Canadians came together to raise more than $7 million in Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Ottawa, Montreal, Regina, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria. 100% of donations raised go directly to fund AKFC international development projects. Funds raised by the Walk also help AKFC to leverage additional support from major partners such as the Government of Canada. This means the impact of every dollar raised is multiplied many times over.

Since its start 30 years ago, the Walk has raised an incredible $82 million for international development programs and initiatives. It is the largest and most successful event of its kind in Canada.
