Dasond vs Zakat

Post by Haysal »

our dasond is equivalent of zakat of muslims. Muslims give zakat to the needy and poor and we give in Jamatkhana via which it is routed to AKF. My ques is Can we give the dasond money to the needy and poor directly ourselves? I have a friend who is a widow, very needy, sick and desparate. but I too do not have that much that I can help out every month but if I and my other ismaili friend can give the dasond money to her she and her kids will be able to survive till she gets on her own feet. PLease advise

Dasond is not Zakat and dassond is given to the Imam and he knows best what to do with it. Once Dasond is given, we do not worry where it goes.

Is it not 10 + 2.5 = 12.5% given?
Is 2.5% Zakat?
Are you free to give it to needy person? Zakat eligible catogaries are listed in Quran.

No 2.5% is not zakat. You can call it by any name. The dassond (tithe, 1/10th) of 10% is volunterily given to the Imam. 2.5% which is 1/40th is given to the Pir. At this time our Pir and Imam is the Same as per the Will of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah.

Dasond is given out of love for the Imam, not out of obligation written in books.

Beside Dasond, Ismailis also give generously to the charities of their choices and to the people or family in need regardless of their religion, race, gender, background etc....

This is not in replacement of Dasond, this is independently of that. There is no confusion between charity and donations which are in one category and Dasond which is completely different in concept. We do not categorise the same way as other people or religions or firqas do.

Zakat is obligation of all Muslims regardless of Firqas.

From Wikipedia
[www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s ... vmcex9aUJQ]
Zakat
"that which purifies"), or alms-giving is the practice of charitable giving by Muslims based on accumulated wealth, and is obligatory for all who are able to do so. It is considered to be a personal responsibility for Muslims to ease economic hardship for other Muslims and eliminate inequality for followers of Islam. The practice is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
The hadith also admonish those who do not give the zakat. According to the hadith, refusal to pay zakat is a sign of hypocrisy, and God will not accept the prayers of such people. The hadith assert that the poor wouldn't be hungry if the rich gave zakat. But they also state that zakat purifies those who give it. It is believed that Allah safeguards the property of those who give zakat. On the day of Judgment, those who didn't give the zakat will be held accountable and punished.

The hadith contain advice on the state-authorized collection of the zakat. The collectors are required not to take more than what is due, and those who are paying the zakat are asked not to evade payment. The hadith also warn of punishment to those who take zakat when they are not eligible to receive it.

Beneficiaries of zakat

According to the Quran, there are eight categories of people (asnaf) who qualify to receive zakat funds:

Those living in absolute poverty (Al-Fuqarā').
Those restrained because they cannot meet their basic needs (Al-Masākīn).
The zakat collectors themselves (Al-Āmilīna 'Alaihā).
Non-Muslims who are sympathetic to Islam or wish to convert to Islam (Al-Mu'allafatu Qulūbuhum).
People whom one is attempting to free from slavery or bondage. Also includes paying ransom or blood money (Diyya). (Fir-Riqāb)
Those who have incurred overwhelming debts while attempting to satisfy their basic needs (Al-Ghārimīn).
Those working in God's way (Fī Sabīlillāh).
Children of the street / Travellers (Ibnus-Sabīl).
According to the Hadith, the family of Muhammad should not consume any Zakat. Zakat should not be given to one's own parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, or spouses. Also, it is forbidden to disburse zakat funds into investments instead of being directly given to those who are in need.

Some scholars disagree whether the poor who qualify should include Non-Muslims. Some state that Zakat may be paid to non-Muslims, but only after the needs of Muslims have been met.

Fi Sabillillah is the most prominent asnaf in Southeast Asian Muslim societies, where it broadly construed to include funding missionary work, Quranic schools and anything else that serves the community (ummah) in general. Zakat can be used to finance a Jihad effort in the path of Allah. Zakat money should be used provided the effort is to raise the banner of Islam.

Additionally, the zakat funds may be spent on the administration of a centralized zakat collection system.
Money given to Ahl e Bait is not Zakat according to Prophetic Hadith.

I honestly do not want to get in protracted debate but Quranic commands apply to all Muslims.

Our belief does not depend on Wikipedia or other books and websites unlike those of some other firqas.

Our beliefs are based on our love for the Prophet (PBUH) and the Ahle-Bayt.

We do enjoy being the chldren of our Time as ordered by the Prophet (PBUH) and today we live according to the guidance of the Imam of the Time.
