1,001 ways to celebrate the Stampede: The Ismaili Muslim Community Sunset Breakfast
Jul 4 2014 by Sky Hornig, communications advisor

Happy Parade Day everyone! We hope you are enjoying the pancakes, the sun, the western wear, the country music and the mini donuts.

One thing we love about Stampede is that while it is something we share, it is something we all celebrate in our own way.

The Ismaili Muslim Community has hosted a Stampede breakfast for the past 17 (!) years. They also have incredible floats every year in the Parade. This year, Stampede falls during the Holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims traditionally fast from dawn to dusk during this time.

For 2014, they have re-imagined their traditional breakfast as a “Break the Fast” sunset breakfast.

“The event will be held at sunset to break the day’s fast,” said the Ismaili Muslim Community. “In keeping with common practise in many parts of the world, the meal taken at sunset to break the fast is known as Iftar. This meal is often shared with family, friends and community, who gather to share a meal, commemorate the end of the day’s fast and socialize. For the first time, we will be marrying the holy Muslim month of Ramadan with the local tradition of the Calgary Stampede.”

The Ismaili Muslim Community is also raising money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary at the event. Hats off to all of you for your generosity and Stampede spirit!
