Rising Star: Inaaya Dhamani

JollyGul.com has launched its new “Rising Stars” service as part of Imamat Day 2020 Celebrations. “Rising Stars” are pre-teens and teens who have shown considerable promise and passion in producing devotional songs and music of all genres. JollyGul.com will work with parents to assist in enhancing the visibility and distribution of their work as well as help with production, if needed, on an ongoing basis.

JollyGul team is pleased to announce that Inaaya Dhamani is JollyGul.com’s first “Rising Star”.

Image

JollyGul.com has launched Inaaya Dhamani’s website: https://www.jollygul.com/inaaya-dhamani/ on its hosting platform. The Jamat can now listen to all her ginans, qasidas and devotional songs in one place with lyrics and English translations displayed at the same time on our custom audio player.

This is a timely launch for Inaaya’s 11th birthday coming up on July 6th. The idea to spring a surprise on Inaaya for her 11th came from Arzina Merali who has been extensively involved with audio production of ginans, qasidas and granths for different Ismaili artists over many years. We worked with Inaaya’s mom Noureen to gather content for this stealth project. So there is a chance you are seeing this even before Inaaya!

The website has the following sections: Profile, Audios, Gallery (Pics), Updates and a Contact Form.

Please start listening to Inaaya’s wonderful recitations on your computer or smartphone browser by clicking on the link: https://www.jollygul.com/inaaya-dhamani/ or through the JollyGul On-Demand (green) App if you have that installed.

Young musician hopes Aga Khan Museum performances will inspire and unite

Image

Afraaz Mulji believes music will bring Canadian communities together as life returns to normal following COVID-19 shutdowns.

The musician will deliver solo piano performances at Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum on July 8, 11, and 12.

The three-day presentation is part of a series of pop-up performances presented by the Museum, which is committed to supporting the work of local and global artists.

“It is an honour to be chosen to present my work," said Mulji, "in this divinely inspired space."

Born in Tanzania, he began formal tabla lessons at age three and piano and theory of music classes at nine. Now based in Toronto, Mulji also plays the guitar, organ, saxophone and drums.

At 13, Mulji left Tanzania to attend boarding school in India. During an exchange trip to France two years later, he was given a chance to test the pipe organ at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, an experience he considers the highlight of his musical career thus far.

He says he goes where the music takes him, hence his decision to attend high school in Lunenburg, N.S., where music is prominent and the then-teenager could attend concerts unique to the East Coast.

Recently, Mulji received another exciting opportunity: to perform and record in Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall.

He describes himself as a world citizen who embraces “the diverse cultural and artistic heritage of the world” and incorporates it into his practice.

“As an artist, I feel responsible for creating a safe space for dialogue and community engagement,” said Mulji.

“Music and art have always been what binds communities together.”

The theme of his pop-up performances at the Museum is Purists Beware, a series he has presented across Canada. Having also performed in the U.S., the U.K., and Spain, Mulji believes the upcoming performances will allow him to “engage with the audience in a special and unique way.”

“I look forward to building a connection with those who attend and making a unique and positive contribution to the local community-based arts scene,” he said.

The Aga Khan Museum reopened on June 27. Mulji performs on July 8 at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.; July 11 at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.; and July 12 at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Saavan - The Monsoon Season

JollyGul.com has now released, jointly with Farhan Shah, the much anticipated "Saavan" song. "Saavan" (Monsoon Season) is a "thumri" - an Indian vocal form based on the romantic-devotional literature inspired by the bhakti movement. The song is a yearning for the beloved to come home as the rainy season has arrived.

The exceptional Ustaad Islamuddin Meer is the featured vocalist and violinist, with Farhan being the 2nd lead adding the contemporary vocal elements. Nureen Sumar (Calgary, Canada) adds her master touch by introducing contemporary choral elements. Shahid Rehman's guitar work, Zeeshan Perwez (bass), Ashiq Ali Meer (tabla), Ajay Harry (drums), Sheroze Hussain (sitar) completes this musical ensemble that takes this production to unbelievable musical heights. Shereen Ladha's (Toronto, Canada) superb dance choreography rounds out this all star cast.

Ali Raza (Unikrew Production) and his team were tasked to bring this video to life and they did a wonderful job working with video footage from Pakistan, Canada and Australia.

This musical production wouldn't have come to life if not for the vision of Farhan Shah and Shahid Rehman of Udan Khatola. Together, they have done marvelous work over the years and this new release is another feather in the cap for them. From concept, to musical arrangements, and everything in between, this is truly a masterpiece.

"Saavan" is a true labor of love from everyone involved in this project. We hope you will enjoy listening and watching the classical and contemporary sounds presentation as much as we enjoyed creating it. If you like what you hear, click on that share button and share some love with your family and friends.

And stay tuned as we have partnered up with Farhan Shah to bring to you many more world-class productions going forward.
