Eshan made his mark as a dancer during Diamond Jubilee year when he earned a spot to represent Midwest Jamat at the National Jubilee Arts Festival which were held in Los Angeles, California in 2018.

Do you know the Ismaili Choir from Portugal?

Did you know that our Choir celebrates 5 years of life this year? It is the ideal time to get to know, in depth, all the hard work that has been done by this wonderful group. Throughout the year, we will let you know the faces, voices and the path of the choir.

Created on April 23, 2016, the Ismaili Choir of Portugal, directed by Maestro Filipe Nunes Leal, is a polyphonic choir with 17 choristers of different nationalities and an instrumentalist known in the community for playing Oud (Syrian musical instrument).

For those who do not know it yet, the Coro Ismaili de Portugal dedicates a substantial part of its time to studying, promoting and interpreting devotional music, mainly SUFI *, which many consider classical, always taking into account the musical quality and cultural relevance of the pieces . As we are a Portuguese choir, we also sing pieces by Portuguese authors and we seek, essentially, the oriental sound in the pieces as a distinguishing factor of our repertoire.

In a second phase, the Coro Ismaili became part of a 2nd group: the choir Uníssono, or Maitar (eg “Choir of Mothers”). With a worthy track record, the Maitar choir, composed of 22 enthusiastic choristers, has already performed in events such as the XXVII Meeting of Choral Groups of Retired and Elderly in the Municipality of Sintra, at the Olga Cadaval Center, at Christmas parties, at the invitation of São Domingos de Benfica Parish, and in Pátio Mela, during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Mawlana Hazar Imam, in July 2018. This choir sings Indian folk songs, that is, songs in Gujarati that have been part of the intrinsic culture of our community for decades.

The Polyphonic choir has had a path of increasing external recognition and has already participated as a Guest Choir in the IV Choir Meeting of the Autonomous University, in the International Festival of Mértola and in the International Talent Showcase of Jubilee Arts (held before an audience of ten thousand people, at Altice Arena, and broadcast worldwide online).

Both choral groups have, in their curriculum, several performances in front of Jamat, before several dignitaries invited by the National Council of Portugal, in events of the Lisbon City Council / EGEAC and in the week of the festivities related to the 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi ( the direction of the Polyphonic choir was even approached by the RTP reporting team).

The Ismaili Choir of Portugal has been a standard bearer of the Muslim community Shia Imami Ismaili, by spreading the message of dialogue, tolerance, openness to diversity and cultivation of pluralism, before the most diverse audiences, through the beauty of a rich instrument : choral music. For almost five years now, we have been privileged, through choral singing, to contribute to the creation of a cosmopolitan ethics so often referred to by Mawlana Hazar Imam in his speeches.

* Sufism (in Arabic: تصوف; transl .: tasawwuf; in Persian: صوفیگری; transl .: Sufi gari) is known as the mystical and contemplative current of Islam. Sufi practitioners, known as Sufis, seek to develop an intimate relationship , direct and continuous with God, using the spiritual practices transmitted by the prophet Muhammad, with emphasis on zikr (the remembrance of God).

Creating something from nothing

By harnessing imagination and creativity, filmmaking and architecture have the potential to transform people’s lives and mindsets.

Whether through film, design, or other media, the arts allow individuals to express themselves and their communities, and remake the world at large through their work.

Careers of the Future https://tv.ismaili/browse/careers-of-the-future is an original series airing exclusively on The Ismaili TV, where students and young professionals can hear directly from members of the Jamat at the leading edge of their fields about how to most effectively prepare for the future of work.

In two recent episodes, we heard from Moyez Alwani and Zeenat Lakhani. Moyez is the Global Head of Design for the Aga Khan Academies, responsible for the designs of the Aga Khan Academy campuses. Zeenat is an accomplished Bollywood screenwriter based in Mumbai and has worked on two films: Shaadi ke Side Effects and Hindi Medium. In their interviews, they shared insights on what being an artist is like and what skills are essential to succeed.

The screenwriting and design episodes examine the recent pioneering work by both guests in a timely and wide-ranging way that blurs conventional boundaries between the two areas. These fields are compelling in terms of an individual’s imagination and creativity since they are often associated with creating something from nothing.

For instance, a screenwriter explores and creates their own new world, which provides insights, shifts perspectives, and evokes emotions in people. Meanwhile an architect, through their designs, has the ability to influence an individual’s life in the real world. In summary, these fields have the potential to transform people’s lives and mindsets.

Being a designer allows an individual to explore a different world. It allows one to encounter different cultures, traditions, and lifestyles which later enables them to incorporate these experiences into their works.

“We've got projects all around the world, and when you get exposure there, you really start to go deep into the culture of those places because there's no way you design a building unless you start understanding the culture. Because of this, it has really enriched my understanding of the world,” said Moyez.

A screenwriter must also have the ability to come up with new and innovative ideas. Creative and critical thinking plays a vital role in the success of one’s work.

“Another important aspect is that you have to have creative stamina,” said Zeenat. “To wake up every morning and to be able to think of new ideas and new approaches is very important because, as a screenwriter, there are days when the same scene will get rejected multiple times.”

There are many options available in the arts today, ranging from writing to animation to computer graphics. However, it takes the right kind of person to build resilience to become an artist, to be driven by the ultimate objective, to be self-motivated and, most importantly, to find inspiration. There has to be a trigger before creating a piece of art. In order for this to happen, an individual must influence their life with as much experience as possible.

Lastly, it is critical that aspiring artists build a strong network of friends and mentors. These individuals not only help with career decisions but also influence an artist’s style, perspective and worldview.

Both episodes are now available to watch in full on The Ismaili TV On Demand https://tv.ismaili/browse/careers-of-the-future.

Expressing art from the heart

Visual art has always been a powerful medium of expression; bridging divides and bringing people together. During a time of physical distance between one another, art takes on an additional dimension, offering the ability to connect with others and with oneself. In response, the UK jurisdiction Jamat launched the heARTspace initiative. Participants were given a very simple brief: their artwork should come from the heart.

Inspired by the overflowing energies of artistic talent from the Jubilee Arts initiative in 2018 and the Ismaili CIVIC’s ‘Smile Through Art’ project in 2020, heARTspace aims to nurture the desire of artists in the community to express themselves through art and share their creativity with others.

Originally envisaged by the Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board (UK), the aim was to create a platform through which people could connect, celebrate, and enjoy the artistic talents within the Jamat. Some of the physical artworks submitted have been displayed in care homes across the UK through Ismaili CIVIC's Smile Through Art initiative.

The global pandemic has been a challenge considering that we are unable to physically stay connected to one another. Art has proven a powerful medium for many in the Jamat who have taken it as a hobby, and channelled their experiences during this time. The ability to create something that has meaning can play a healing role in improving mental health and providing comfort during times of loneliness and isolation.

Since August 2020, AKYSB have received 150 original art pieces from 50 artists of all ages and backgrounds within the Jamat, including pieces that were submitted to ‘Smile Through Art’. The artwork presented encapsulates the beautiful mission of heARTspace – creating art that comes from the heart. Each piece contains a quote from the artist that captures a unique story and reveals what their art means to them.

AKYSB were captivated by the way art was being used as a positive outlet and a channel for self-expression during the recent lockdowns. The team saw an opportunity to capture this by collaborating with the Ismaili CIVIC initiative ‘Smile Through Art’, in which elderly residents in care homes received hundreds of pieces of visual art from the Ismaili community during the pandemic.

Zulfi Amade, a talented Ismaili artist who participated at the Jubilee Arts International Arts Festival in Lisbon in 2018, has had his artwork featured in various galleries, including heARTspace, spoke about what creating and sharing art means to him,

“Art is a wonderful form of escapism from the everyday in that it’s full of enjoyment and you never feel bored when you are immersed in it,” said Zulfi. “The magic is created by the artist, by occasionally being able to pick a dream from a cloud.”

As a professional artist and architect, Zulfi is encouraged by the initiative of heARTspace as it invites artists of all abilities in the community to not only create magic with their hands but to also be given a platform to feel appreciated for their courage to display their work. His own artistic journey was sparked from a young age when his first piece of art was cherished by someone dear to him that he gifted it to. This encouraged him to pursue art professionally.

The beauty of art, in words of Picasso, “is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” Zulfi believes heARTspace will be the spark our community’s artists need to take their love for art further, and even dream about displaying their work in more galleries.

An upcoming virtual exhibition further aims to nurture and develop this awe-inspiring artistic creativity in the community, and for the global Jamat to enjoy viewing these art pieces in the comfort of their own homes.

Sun on Water (Hussein Janmohamed) - Chronos Vocal Ensemble

Sun on Water
Chronos Vocal Ensemble
Toronto-based choral artist, composer and music facilitator Hussein Janmohamed draws on multidimensional aspects of his diverse cultural background, Ismaili intellectual heritage and personal musical experience in composing "Sun on Water" which finds its inspiration in the mystery of Canadian winter sunrises and depicts a sense of yearning for “ultimate union” between sky and water, light and dark, lover and Beloved.

The texts and music hold Sufi, Western choral and Christian traditions, Middle Eastern rhythms, Hindu and Indic Ismaili Muslim traditions in an integrated wholeness amplified by a vision of harmonious coexistence and peace.

"Sun on Water" was performed by the Chronos Vocal Ensemble, conducted by Jordan Van Biert, in November 2019 at St. Andrew's United Church, Edmonton to open the choir's 2019-2020 Season.

"Sun on Water" begins quietly as deep waters rumble underneath. Musical layers and ongoing repeated zikr amplify a longing for spiritual vision and unity. A burst of sun breaks forth. Yet, as the sun’s rays shimmer on the surface of the lake, the deep water still echoes their mutual yearning for ultimate union.

The lyrics invoke the word "Surya", Sanskrit for Sun, Supreme Light. And the composition then takes a line from Ismaili ginan "Ab Teri Mohabbat" by Pir Shams as well as a couple of lines from the Bible Psalm 130.

JollyGul.com appreciates that choral music of this type is new to many of us; we have lyrics, translations and brief explanations displayed as the performance progresses - we appreciate Hussein's help with this process even though he strongly prefers you experience and feel the different musical layers and words in your own individual way. We have deliberately avoided being over descriptive.

Our profound appreciation to Chronos Vocal Ensemble for permission to publish this textually enhanced version on JollyGul.com YouTube Channel for the benefit of our Jamat.

Enjoy!

I approach painting as its own unique genre and I use it to articulate spirituality through art. I develop interpretative dexterity by conveying complex ideas which allow me to take a position in spiritual art as a subject. My goal is to move away from interpretations of spiritual art that fall under a religious aegis and lens, aiming instead to intermingle spirituality with scientific/philosophical theories of mind and body. I am also inspired by sacred geometry, Kufic texts and arabesque calligraphy. Using these inspirations in tangent with spiritual art allows for my works to function as a dynamic agent of spirituality; providing a perspective to the spectator that goes beyond religious interpretation and towards spiritual pluralism.

How does you art promote cultural diversity?

The idea of merging spirituality and art motivated me to create a series of paintings. Conceptually, the mechanisms by which the Universe was created has baffled the human mind ever since we turned our eyes upwards to the stars. As observed in Eye of Creation, which recently has been selected for Caravan’s exhibition on the theme of “GENESIS: The Beginning of Creativity” to be showcased in New York. The work explores the scientific explanation of the birth of the universe - the Big Bang - which was energetic, concentrated and explosive. The circle in the centre of the works symbolises the outburst of God and the expansion from the centre in a wave-motion from dark to light which is symbolic of God’s creative force. Thereby my expression of God in my work is one that is achieved not through religious mechanisms but from a naturalistic perspective. Thus, moving it in the direction of pluralism and inter-faith spiritual expressions, making my practice accessible to a host of diverse cultures.

How have you used Art in your career?

In my business career, using my degree in Business/Marketing, I applied my artistic talents to advertising, however, last December I opened a gallery in Cape Town to assist emerging artists from minority groups. Furthermore, I have acquired a curation certificate from Sothebys and I am setting up a studio that provides free space for emerging artists. These projects will shape my future alongside my personal artistic development.

The MASHAL team deliver their "magic" again, this time with a mashup of O.P Nayyar's 11 top movie song compositions as a special heartfelt tribute to the great music composer and producer.

Omkar Prasad Nayyar (1926 – 2007) was an Indian film music composer, singer-songwriter, music producer, and musician. He is considered to be one of the most rhythmic and melodious music directors of the Hindi film industry. Nayyar worked extensively with singers Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi.

OP as he was popularly known, defied established norms of music making and despite lack of any formal training in music, composed some of the most groundbreaking tunes. That was his genius and gift to us all that we enjoy even decades later.

Enjoy MASHAL's beautiful rendition of O.P Nayyar's spirited and full of zest for life songs.

I like oriental music and oriental architecture. Arabs are very sensitive to their culture and their traditions, keep them and adapt them to modern trends.
