Bibi Fátima Tasbeeh (Zikhr)

Bibi Fátima is one of the Panjtan Pak, - the purified 5 from the family of the Prophet (PBUH).

Panjtan Pak are referred to in many Ginans (see below) and in the Ismaili anthem https://youtu.be/Fze9ArTusds

They are;

1. Hazrat Prophet Mohammed
2. Hazrat Ali
3. Hazrat Bibi Fátima
4. Hazrat Hassan
5. Hazrat Hussain

Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said - The purification verse (33:33) is revealed about the ‘Panjtan’. For me and Ali and Hasan and Hussain and Hazrat Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with them all), Verily Almighty Allah wants, O family of Prophet, that (He) keeps the impurity away from you and makes you pure and further very pure” (Jama al-Bayaan Fee Tafseer-ul-Qur’an, Volume 22, page 5, Published in Beirut in 1398 Hijri/1978)

The Bibi Fátima Tasbeeh - Zikhr are as follows

1. Allah hu Akbar. - Allah is the Greatest
2. Alhamdulillah -All praise is due to Allah - Praise be to Allah
3. Subhanallah - All Glory is due to Allah - Glory be to Allah

Each of these are to be recited, and they are recited today, 33 times each during additional Ismaili congregational prayers, e.g.

It has been narrated from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir that he stated:

“Allah has not been worshiped by anything better than tasbih Hazrat Zahra—from the aspect of praise and dhikr; Allah would grant it to Fatimah if there was/is a better practice rather than this tasbih.

Imam Jafar al Sadiq also said;
“Reciting Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) everyday after every Salat is liked by me more than reciting one thousand rakats of (mustahab) namaz”.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) said that:
“One who recites the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) and then seeks forgiveness, will be forgiven”.

The Tasbeeh of Hazrat Fatima Zahra (s.a.) is from the “emphatically recommended” acts of worship in the Islamic Shariat.

It has immense significance based on guidance ( Talim & Tawil ) from the Imams (a.s.) and the Shiite jurists. It is a simple , short & a very powerful act of worship.

From the aspect of performance; its effect, reward blessings, & merit are abundant. This can also be gauged & elucidated from the fact that when the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) wished to impart this act of worship to his daughter Lady Zahra (s.a.), he declared,

‘O Fatima! I have granted you something that is superior to a maidservant and to the world and everything in it.’ (Aasaar o Asraare Tasbeehe Zahra (s.a.) , Pg. 7)

In this context Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) said , ‘Allah is not worshipped by anything more meritorious than the Tasbeeh of Fatima Zahra (s.a.). Had there been any worship superior to it, most surely the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would have granted it to Janabe Fatima (s.a.).’ (Wasaaelush Shia , Vol 4 Pg. 1024)

Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says about the dearness of this Tasbeeh in the eyes of the Imams of the Ahlulbayt (a.s.):

“Reciting Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) everyday after every Salat is liked by me more than reciting one thousand rakats of (mustahab) namaz”. (Al-Kafi, Kitabus Salaat)
Reciting this Tasbeeh results in forgiveness of sins. In a tradition , Imam Mohammad Baqir (as) says:
“One who recites the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) and then seeks forgiveness, will be forgiven”. (Wasaaelush Shia Vol 4, Pg. 1023)
It also results in driving Shaitan away and in the satisfaction of Allah as tradition from Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) says:“(Reciting Tasbeeh) drives away Shaitan and makes results in the satisfaction of Allah”. (Wasaaelush Shia Vol 4, Pg. 1023)
Reciting Tasbeeh regularly delivers the reciter from adversities in this world as well as the hereafter. One of the graceful effects of the regular recitation of the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) is that it delivers the reciter from adversities and hardships in this world as well as the hereafter. Thus one should not ignore its benefits and effects and should not be careless and lazy in its recitation
In this connection, Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says to one of his companions :

“ You do adhere to it and be regular about its recitation, for surely one who is steadfast upon its recitation will not encounter adversity.” (Al-Kafi, Kitabus Salaat, Pg. 343)
How to recite Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.):

According to a tradition from Imam Jafar Sadiq, one should recite Allaho Akbar 34 times, Alhamdolillah 33 times and Subhaanallah 33 times. (Behaarul Anwaar Vol 85, Pg. 334)

Reciting Tasbeeh immediately after Salat

Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) should be recited immediately on completion of Namaz. This entails that as soon as the reciter has finished the Namaz, he should remain seated in the same position of Tashahud without moving his feet and doing any other thing, immediately he should commence the recitation of the Tasbeeh. The reciting of Tasbeeh immediately on completion of Namaz has a special excellence, which is not there otherwise.
The above statement can be evidenced by the following tradition of Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) wherein he states: “One who recites the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) before even moving his feet, Allah will forgive him..” (At-Tahzeeb of Shaikh Toosi (r.a.) , Vol 2, Pg. 105)
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) has said :
“One who recites the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) after a wajib namaz before he stretches out his legs ( i.e. he recites the Tasbeeh while he is in the posture of Tashahud) , then Jannat becomes wajib upon him” (Falaahus Saael by Ibne Taaoos (r.a.), Pg. 165)
Another tradition from Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says:
“One who glorifies Allah after the obligatory prayer through the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.), and then follows it up by saying ‘Laa elaaha illallaho’, Allah will forgive his sins.” (Al-Kafi, Kitabus Salaat, Pg. 342)
Reciting the Tasbeeh of Syeda Zahra (s.a.) before sleeping
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says :
“One who recites the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) at the time of going to bed, he will be accounted amongst those who have remembered Allah a lot.” (Wasaaelush Shia Vol 4, Pg. 1026)
In the book ‘Wasaaelush Shia’ there is a tradition from Imam Mohammad Baqir (as) which says that at the time of going to bed, Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.)and then Maoozatain (Surah Falaq and Surah Naas) and Ayatul Kursi should be recited.
Teaching the recitation of Tasbeeh to the children
In this connection, Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says : “ O Abu Haroon! We order our children to recite the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.)in the same manner as we order them for the performance of Namaz ” (Al-Kafi, Kitabus Salaat, Pg. 343)
Reciting Tasbeeh made out of the Turbah of grave of Imam Husain (a.s.)
It is better that the Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) be made of the pure Turbah (soil) of the grave of Imam Husain (a.s.)
It has been narrated from Imame Zamana (a.t.f.s.), “ One who just holds the Tasbeeh made out of the soil of the grave of Imam Husain (as) and does not do any Zikr, even then for him will be written the reward of having recited the Azkaar” (Wasaaelush Shia Vol 4, Pg. 1033)
Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) says : “One zikr or Isteghfaar recited on the Tasbeeh made out of the soil of the grave of Imam Husain (as) is equal to 70 such zikr recited on any other thing.” (Wasaaelush Shia Vol 4, Pg. 1033)
Some noteworthy points:
1.       One of the conditions of worship, rather the most important of them all, is being attentive in its performance. This is specially so in the recitation of Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.).
2.       There should be continuity in the recitation of the Tasbeeh without any interruptions. This has been the practice of our holy Imams (a.s.) (Al- Kaafi, Kitaabus Salaat, Pg. 343 )
1.       In case one has a doubt regarding the number of Azkaar that he has recited, then he should start again. This is according to a tradition from Imam Sadiq (a.s.) (Al- Kaafi, Kitaabus Salaat, Pg. 342 )
Thus, by the grace of Allah and the blessings of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) , we have come to realize the importance of reciting Tasbeeh of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) and its merits. We pray to Allah to grant us the Taufeeq that we may be regular in its recitation.
The Tasbeeh as a Powerful Dua for Any / All needs
In case of a particular need /problem ,this tasbeeh is to be recited with that specific intention for the need to get fulfilled .Eg it is highly recommended for security of Rizq /Sustenance if recited with that specific intention at the door or in car when leaving for work /interview etc

Let us reflect upon the Tasbih of Bibi Fatima and its practice in our lives today.

Known in the Muslim tradition with the honorific title of al-Zahra, the Radiant1, Hazrat Bibi Fatima (alayha-s-salam) was Prophet Muhammad’s (salla'l-lahu alayhi wa-aal-hi wa-sallam) only living child after his passing. He loved her deeply, and is known to have said, “Fatima is a part of me, whoever harms her, harms me.”2 Qadi al-Nu’man reports a number of hadiths, sayings or deeds of the Prophet, that illustrate Bibi Fatima’s position of excellence among believers. He notes that the Prophet himself named Bibi Fatima as “the foremost lady of the whole community of believers,'' and “the first lady of the women of Paradise.”3

In the Shi’i Ismaili tradition, Bibi Fatima has a central status as the initiator of the line of Imams from the Prophet.4 Indeed, in naming the tenth-century Fatimid Caliphate in Egypt, the Imams asserted their blood ties to the Prophet through his daughter.5 Similarly, Al-Azhar University in Cairo, wherein azhar means shining, is named after Bibi Fatima’s title ‘al-Zahra’, which means the illuminated. The Fatimids also celebrated Bibi Fatima’s birthday and made it into a holiday.6 More recently, we can observe the use of ‘Zahra’ in the calligraphic patterns at the Ismaili Centre in Dushanbe.7

Bibi Fatima lived a life of voluntary poverty. Said differently, even though the Ahl al-Bayt, the family of the Prophet, had access to resources, they chose to share it with the community. Bibi Fatima would work day and night to grind wheat to make bread, a process that often left her hands bleeding and covered in blisters.

In order to help her with her tireless work, the Prophet taught her a tasbih:

“After every prayer declare God’s greatness [that is, say Allahu Akbar (God is great)]…and praise Him [that is, say al-hamdu lil-lah (Praise be to God)]…and glorify Him [that is, say Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)] thirty-three times. Thereafter end by saying la ilaha illa’l-lah [there is no deity other than God]. This will be better than the world and what it contains, and better than what you desire.”8

Accordingly, Bibi Fatima made this tasbih a fixed practice for herself after every prayer, and thus, the prayer was named after her.9

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (alayha-s-salam) is reported to have said: “Allah has not been worshiped by anything better than [the] tasbih [of] Hazrat Zahra.” Today, Shia Muslims across the world continue this practice.10 In fact, the veneration of Bibi Fatima transcends the Sunni-Shia divide, particularly in South Asia.11

Through this tasbih, we submit ourselves to Allah and express our trust in Him. We affirm that Allah is present, that He is aware, and as Allah says in Surah Qaf, Ayah 16 of the Holy Qur’an, He is closer to us than our jugular vein. Bibi Fatima’s tasbih, therefore, is simultaneously a call for help as well as an embodied performance that gives us spiritual strength. Let us endeavor to follow in the footsteps of Bibi Fatima and make tasbih an intentional and mindful practice in our everyday lives.

Hazrat Bibi Fatimah (alayhas-salaam)’s Tasbih – A beautiful gift from Allah [swt]

According to some reports, Hazrat Bibi Fatimah (alayhas-salaam) was born, and passed away too, in the month of Jamada al-Thani. She was the most beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (sallal-lahu alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam) and his first wife, Khadija bint Khuwaylid (alayhas-salaam). Also wife of Mawlana ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (alayhis-salaam) and mother of al-Hasan and al-Husayn (alayhis-salaam). Of the many titles she had, the most noteworthy are az-Zahra meaning ‘The Shining One’ and ‘Sayyidatun Nisa al-Alamin‘ meaning ‘The Chief of all the Women in the World’.

Within the Ismaili Muslim tradition, one significant Tasbih is known as “Bibi Fatimah’s Tasbih”. It is related that when Hazrat Bibi Fatimah az-Zahra (a.s) went to her father, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and asked for a servant to perform chores, he said: “O Fatima, I shall give you something better than that.” He continued, “After every prayer declare:

God’s greatness – say Allahu-Akbar (God is the greatest);

and praise Him – say Alhamduli’llah (Praise be to God),

and extol Him – say Subhan-Allah (Glorified is God).

This will be better than the world and what it contains and better than what you desire.” Bibi Fatimah (a.s) was pleased with it and made this Tasbih a regular practice for herself and, accordingly, this Tasbih was named after her. An expression of understanding the Oneness and Greatness of Allah [swt]. It is said that anyone who recites this Tasbih receives credit for one hundred good works and one such good work brings credit for ten of its likes before God. The practice of recitation of Bibi Fatimah’s Tasbih communally is part of Chandraat Majlis in all Ismaili Jamatkhanas and in some other ceremonies of the Ismaili Tariqah. Constant repetition of this Tasbih individually should alleviate trials and tribulations from one’s life and bring about peace and harmony.

The Shi’ah claim for the Imamat always emphasizes the name of Bibi Fatimah (a.s) prominently. The preamble of the Ismaili Constitution also confirms this fact:

“The Holy Prophet (sallal-lahu alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam) designated and appointed… Mawlana Ali… to be the first Imam to continue the Ta’wil and Ta’lim of Allah’s final message and to guide the murids and proclaimed that the Imamat should continue by heredity through Hazrat Mawlana Ali (alayhis-salaam) and his daughter Hazrat Bibi Fatimat-az-Zahra, Khatun-i-Jannat (alayhas-salaam).“
