Why we say Ya Ali Madad?

The Holy Quran says: Say, In whose hand is all soveriegnty over all things, and He is the only one who can provide help, but needs no help if you know?" [23:88]<BR><BR>According to the above verse, only Almighty Allah can provide help. on the other hand we are seeking help from Ali. Any Quranic Ayat, Hadeeth or Farman of any Imam, under which we can seek help from Ali? I would like to mention here that we are living in a joint atmosphere of [Sunnis, Ithnasharis and Ismailis], under these conditions, Ya Ali Madad is severely objectioned by opponent groups. only we can say Assalam-o-Alaikum to each other. only specific reference is needed to satisfy the others.
