Improving Access to Reproductive, Maternal and Newborn Health in Mwanza, Tanzania (IMPACT)

Duration: 2017-2021

Location: Tanzania

Reach: 974,400 people (695,000 women and girls; 279,400 men and boys)

Budget: $14.7 million (Global Affairs Canada: $12 million; AKFC: $2.7 million)

Description:

IMPACT is accelerating the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality by addressing major reproductive, maternal, and newborn health challenges in eight districts of Mwanza Region, which is located in northern Tanzania, bordering Lake Victoria.

The program focuses on improving availability of quality maternal and newborn health services; and increasing the use of those services by women and their families. IMPACT takes a holistic approach to maternal and newborn health, inclusive of sexual, reproductive and adolescent health, advancing gender equality, and concern for the environment.

Key activities include:

- Upgrading and equipping 80 public health facilities to deliver quality, gender responsive emergency obstetric and newborn care.
- Capacity building for health system managers, including collaborating with regional and council health management teams and health facility governance committees to enhance planning, budgeting, and quality service delivery.
- Building the knowledge and skills of health professionals and community volunteers in high-impact areas of reproductive, maternal, and newborn health.
- Mobilizing and empowering communities to promote and practice healthy behaviours that support positive reproductive, maternal and newborn health outcomes and advance gender equality.

IMPACT is directly benefitting approximately 653,499 women of reproductive age (15-49) and 83,606 infants under the age of one (50% girls). An additional 320,918 men are also expected to be reached through community sensitization activities aimed at improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.

A COVID-19 update from our CEO

Dear friends,

As conditions around the world change rapidly during these unprecedented times, we wanted to send a brief update to keep you informed of how we are responding to COVID-19.

COVID-19 has now grown from an outbreak in one city to a pandemic of global proportions. It is unlikely any country will be untouched by its ripple effects. More than ever, it is clear how Canada's future is intertwined with the rest of the world.

The health and safety of our supporters, volunteers, and staff are paramount to us. In Canada, we are following all recommendations of the Government of Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada , as well as the local public health authorities in the Canadian cities where we operate.

That means, effective last week:

All our Canadian colleagues are working from home.

We have come to the difficult decision to suspend this year's World Partnership Walk and World Partnership Golf campaigns. We will have more information on alternate plans to share on these soon.

We have canceled all tours of the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat building in Ottawa until further notice.

Our traveling exhibit, In a Heartbeat , is suspended until further notice.

All other in-person events have either been canceled, rescheduled online, or postponed.

We have taken these steps to do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19. We are immensely fortunate in Canada to have such competent health leadership, and we encourage everyone to heed the advice of health authorities as best they can.

Healthcare facilities and workers around the world are at the frontlines of events like these. Canadian support over the past 40 years has strengthened health systems across Africa and Asia, and we remain hopeful these investments will mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in the geographies where we work.

We also want to assure you that we remain committed to our countries and communities of operation during this crisis. The Aga Khan Development Network, of which we are a part, is mounting a robust response to address the many aspects of this pandemic. Now more than ever, it is important that our work of strengthening systems, institutions, and communities for times of fragility pushes forward.

We may all be working remotely for now, but we are still here for you . If you are already connected to a staff member, you can reach them by email. Otherwise, you can just reply to this email, and we will direct your inquiry to the right person. If you have questions about your 2019 tax receipts, you can reach our Donor Services team directly at donorservices@akfc.ca or leave a voicemail at 613-237-2532 ext. 191.

In global crises like these, it is easy to dwell on what worries us. But I invite us all to step forward in support of our friends, relatives, and neighbors for whom this time may be especially trying. We can weather this better together.

We will reach out again as the situation and our plans to respond develop. Until then, we wish you and yours continued good health and spirits.

Sincerely,

Khalil Z. Shariff

A message from the CEO

Dear friends,

It is with great pride and gratitude that we celebrate Aga Khan Foundation Canada’s 40th anniversary this month.

As part of the global Aga Khan Development Network, AKFC was established in July 1980 with an ambitious agenda to work with Canadians to improve quality of life for millions around the world.

In partnership with the Government of Canada, we have invested in women and men over the past four decades to help build resilient communities and strong institutions for generations to come.

From the mountain ranges of Central Asia to the coasts of East Africa, these collaborations have tackled poverty on all fronts, including through better access to health care, more effective education systems and literacy, improved incomes and livelihoods, and vibrant civil society. In all of our work, we seek to reach the most vulnerable and marginalized – particularly women and girls – and empower them with opportunities to reach their full potential.

These efforts have been sustained these 40 years by the thousands of Canadians who volunteer their time and talent, raise funds, and tell their stories about the role we all play as global citizens. Our achievements have been fuelled by the dedication and conviction of our supporters, and we are thankful for their confidence in us as we work together towards a more prosperous, peaceful, and pluralist world. We are similarly in debt to generations of leaders who have governed, stewarded, and guided AKFC through these last decades with wisdom and care.

We have made much progress over the last 40 years, but the current pandemic reminds us of the urgent and ongoing need for investments in the developing world. Now more than ever, it is important that our work of strengthening systems, institutions, and communities for times of fragility moves ahead. Indeed, redoubling our efforts in this regard may well be the most important way of commemorating this milestone.

In 2012, His Highness the Aga Khan visited Canada to receive an honorary degree from the University of Ottawa. He ended his speech on that occasion with the following reflection: “In my experience, a country’s standing in our contemporary world is no longer recognized by what it can achieve for itself, but by what it can do for others. In this context, Canada has truly become a great, world power.”

What a privilege for AKFC, and all who have supported it, to have made a difference in people’s lives over the last 40 years by bringing the best of Canada to the world.

Thank you for all you do for AKFC and for the global community.

Sincerely,

Khalil Z. Shariff

A year like no other

It has been a year since the World Health Organization’s declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. In different ways, life has fundamentally changed for all of us.

As we mark this anniversary, we wanted to share reflections from some of our colleagues on what we’ve learned, how we’ve changed, and what we’re hopeful for as we look to the future.

Our ongoing response to COVID-19 in India and around the world

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a serious global health crisis, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Focus Humanitarian Assistance are responding to the alarming situations in India and other countries struggling with second and third waves of infection.

At the outset of the pandemic, AKDN and FOCUS established the Global Pandemic Relief Fund to support the critical work needed to address the crisis. Donations to the fund have helped AKDN provide high-quality medical care, share public health messages, and meet the need for emergency food, medicine, and shelter.

If you wish to support our ongoing COVID-19 response effort, a contribution may be made to the Global Pandemic Relief Fund.

Donate: https://www.akfc.ca/pandemicfund/

AKDN’s continued response includes:
The Prince Aly Khan Hospital in Mumbai has treated more than 1,800 COVID-19 patients, provided over 13,000 COVID-19 tests, and administered thousands of vaccinations.
With support from FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance, community institutions in India are helping families access hospital beds, telemedicine, vaccine guidance, emergency assistance, and mental health counselling.
In Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Kenya, and Tanzania, 21 field hospitals with more than 400 beds have been established for COVID-19 patients.
In Central Asia and East Africa, an eHealth system is connecting communities in remote areas to virtual consultations.

On behalf of the communities we serve, thank you.

For questions or additional information on the Fund, please contact us at 1-800-267-2532 or email donorservices@akfc.ca.

Warmly,
Aga Khan Foundation Canada
