At the invitation of the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Mawlana Hazar Imam will undertake an official visit to the country from 1-4 December, in conjunction with which he will meet with the Jamat under the jurisdiction of the Ismaili Council for Portugal.

To be able to focus his attention on the Jamat in this jurisdiction, Hazar Imam does not wish members of the Jamat from other parts of the world to travel to Portugal during his visit.

Volunteer Registry

As part of Mawlana Hazar Imam's visit to Portugal, we invite all volunteers willing to offer their time, energy, and dedication to make this visit a historic moment for our Jamat.

We encourage all volunteers — uniformed, non-uniformed, and multifaith family members — to express their interest in participating in this event as volunteers.

Upon completing your registration for Didar http://iiportugal.org/, you will have the opportunity to express your interest in volunteering and select up to three areas in which you would like to collaborate.

Volunteer opportunities will be available in the days leading up to the visit, on the day of the visit itself, and after the visit. The identified areas are as follows:

Access and Registration

Celebrations (Entertainment)

Communication and Graphic Design + Audiovisual

Food and Beverages

Health, Childcare and Special Needs

Prayer Room

Footwear and Coat Rack

Hygiene and Maintenance

Transportation and Assembly of Materials

Diversity and Multifaith

Transportation and Accommodation

Location, Security and Flow

After you express your interest, the team will seek to find the best possible match between the event's needs and the areas of interest you indicated.

Although every effort is being made to integrate registered volunteers, not all can be assigned, given the expected high number of demonstrations.

Once you are assigned to a team, you will be contacted with information about your placement. Registration for volunteering ends on November 16, 2025.

What does it mean to be Ismaili?

Image

Diversity exists in our Jamat, in the Muslim Ummah, and in the extended societies in which we live. But this fact is not accidental. It is how we were designed to be.

As Allah tells us in Surah 49, Verse 13 of the Quran:

“We created you male and female and made you peoples and tribes so that you may know one another.”

Allah created us different by design, and our diversity is a strength. This diversity is so omnipresent that even what it means to be an Ismaili Muslim varies according to our country, language, and place of origin. Our experience as Ismailis emerges from our experiences, our perspectives, and the way we, as individuals, relate to the world around us.

The Ismaili Jamat is an increasingly mobile Jamat, migrating to various places around the world, either by choice – in search of better opportunities for themselves and their families – or because they are forced to do so by circumstances of political instability. With the increase in this movement, there is a growing diversity in our own immediate spheres – Our own Jamatkhanas are becoming microcosms of a linguistic and cultural diversity that we could barely imagine before.

Obviously, being Ismaili is not defined by what a person wears or says. It has nothing to do with where one lives, nor with skin color. It has nothing to do with covering or not covering one's head, nor with the language in which we recite the tasbih. Whether because there are Despite differences in age or language, ethnicity or gender, ability or origin, we are all, each and every one of us, different.

So, what does it mean to be Ismaili?

Being Ismaili has to do with our love and devotion to our beloved Imam. The Imam gave us a remarkable gift – the opportunity to come together, to listen, to learn and to grow as a Jamat. These moments are more than mere gatherings; These are opportunities for us to rediscover each other, to understand the stories, hopes, and experiences that shape our community.

In every family, each brother or sister has something distinct – a different way of thinking, a unique voice, a personal rhythm. However, what unites them is not similarity, but love. In this same spirit, our Imam welcomes us all – not despite the differences, but because of them.

So perhaps a question for each of us is this: are we truly using this moment to look at each other more deeply – to go beyond familiar faces and find the shared love that makes us a family?

There is no commitment to God if there is no commitment to the Earth

The Mulaqat in Lisbon will be a celebration, a gathering for sharing, an opportunity for spiritual growth, but also an opportunity to reflect and act towards a more sustainable and responsible future. Being sustainable is not just a nice word — it's a necessity, a way to ensure that future generations inherit more possibilities, not fewer.

What does “Sustainability” mean?

“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”United Nations, 1987

It is the principle of “no harm”—that is, not causing harm—which should be the central element of any activity, thus making it truly sustainable.

And the first step is definitely collective education. What is the most effective way for us to learn and modify our behaviors? By following the example.

The National Council, in the process of organizing Mawlana Hazar Imam's visit to Portugal, is taking some measures to ensure that no harm is caused to the environment, people, or future generations. It's about setting an example by taking initiatives and encouraging attitudes that promote behavioral change. Seemingly small actions – such as choosing sustainable materials, disposing of waste correctly, promoting car sharing, and measuring food waste to understand our consumption patterns. Small actions with impact, which are absolutely measurable, even with a significant margin of error. Without measuring the impact of our actions, we cannot:

(1) offset the footprint of the mentioned actions.

(2) mitigate the footprint in future events.

Although we only apply a few measures, the important thing is to take the first step and begin the journey of Sustainability. To transform ideas into action, this event in Lisbon will incorporate several concrete best practices. Here are the main ones:

Single-serving food in recycled/recyclable and/or biodegradable packaging
For meals and snacks, containers, cutlery, or packaging will be made of materials that can be recycled or are biodegradable. This reduces the impact of waste and helps encourage a reuse mindset.

Measuring food waste on the plate
We will measure how much food is produced, how much is distributed, how much is wasted (leftovers on plates), and finally, how much we will donate. All this to understand food patterns, to raise awareness about waste, and to ensure that remaining organic waste is disposed of correctly (composting or proper treatment).

This practice not only generates useful data for future events, but allows us all to look directly at what we consume and what we waste.

Volunteers indicating where and how to recycle
We will have volunteers who will help to know where, how and why to recycle. This direct guidance facilitates everyone's participation and reinforces that recycling is simple, and is part of the journey.

Distribution of stainless steel bottles for refilling and future reuse
Instead of disposable plastic bottles, each Jamat member will have the chance to receive a stainless steel bottle. This bottle can be reused during the event and in future moments. A small gesture — But it symbolizes reuse, less plastic consumption, and a commitment to the future.

Creation and monitoring of a sustainability team
There will be a dedicated team to monitor all these best practices, track processes, ensure that ideas are transformed into action, provide support during the event, and then reflect on the results. Because implementing ideas requires monitoring, learning, and adjusting.

Of course – we don't claim that this event will be perfect or completely "zero-impact". But the most important thing is to take the first step. Every measure, however small it may seem, counts. What matters is starting the journey: by doing so, we inspire others, create culture, and pave the way for more and better in the future.

If five thousand people participate with this spirit, the impact will be much greater than just the gestures themselves: it will be a message and a change of mindset that should be replicated at home.

Dear brothers and sisters of Jamat, as we gather in Lisbon, we have a special opportunity to show that celebration, community, sharing, and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. This event will be a bridge between what we are (a committed community) and what we can be (a community that cares for creation).

May this gathering inspire us, unite us, and set us on the path of actions that respect the Earth, people, and the future.

As the Aga Khan IV, Shah Karim Al-Hussain, reminds us: “The future is not predicted, but made.”

And that is exactly it: let's make the future.

We are counting on you for this stage—and every step counts. See you soon in Lisbon!

Journey Home

Image

As part of the visit of our beloved Imam to Portugal, we invite the entire Jamat to join in creating a collective art installation — a shared gift of love, gratitude, and devotion.

Context

Inspired by Portugal’s deep cultural connection to the sea, beautifully captured in the words of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen, “The sea is my homeland,” Journey Home is a Jamat-led art installation that celebrates water as a symbol of each murid’s spiritual journey.

In our tradition, water represents life, guidance, and the journey of the soul. Just as rain gathers into rivers and returns to the ocean, the soul also returns to its eternal home. Each drop follows its own path, yet all merge into the vast ocean — a symbol of the Imam as the source of spiritual nourishment, unity, and light. In essence, we all come from a single soul, and while our journeys are unique, we remain connected, flowing together toward the same divine source.

The installation was designed and created by local artists from within the Jamat, who envisioned a way to bring this theme to life as a symbolic offering to the Imam. Using sustainable materials, they created a concept where raindrops fall into a central ocean, symbolising the unity of the Jamat under the Imam’s guidance. The design also invites active community participation, making it a shared gift that reflects creativity, devotion, and sustainability — reusing everyday materials in meaningful ways.

Phase One

In the first phase, the Jamat brought cardboard boxes that our Dar-at-Talim students cut, painted, and transformed into more than 300 water drops, where the Jamat could write messages of love and gratitude to our beloved Imam.

Through this initiative, we express our devotion while caring for the planet — aligning sustainability with spiritual purpose.

Each drop represents one of us, forming together an ocean of faith and unity to be offered to the Imam.

Phase Two

For the second phase, we kindly ask the Jamat to bring a bottle cap — preferably blue — to their Jamatkhana.

We will sign a Sustainability Commitment, and symbolically leave a white fingerprint on the cap to mark that commitment.

These caps will be incorporated into the final art piece as the Final Ocean, symbolising each murid’s personal contribution to a healthier planet.

How will this phase work?

We ask the Jamat to bring their blue bottle cap on the following dates, where they will symbolically sign it:

Thursday, 20 November — Ismaili Centre Lisbon • Seixal Jamatkhana • Oeiras Jamatkhana
Friday, 21 November — Ismaili Centre Lisbon • Seixal Jamatkhana • Oeiras Jamatkhana
Saturday, 22 November — Ismaili Centre Lisbon • Seixal Jamatkhana • Oeiras Jamatkhana
Saturday, 22 November — Youth Party
For the Jamat living far from these centres —Setúbal, Porto, Golegã, Algarve, Spain —We want you to participate as well. How?

Collect cardboard boxes, similar to cereal boxes, to use as base material. You can find the template for the water drop (approximately 10 x 8 cm) here. Use the template to cut out the water drops. One water drop per person.

Paint both sides of each drop in light shades of blue, as shown in the image.

Write a message to Mawlana Hazar Imam on the drop using a black permanent marker, following the guidelines provided.

In addition to cardboard, bring blue plastic bottle caps. Each person will sign their cap by dipping a finger in white paint and leaving a fingerprint.

This signature is a symbolic act affirming our commitment to caring for the planet. It is an important moment to reflect on how we can change our daily consumption habits.

If you prefer to record your message instead of writing it (especially young children or elderly), you may record a short video individually or as a group and upload it to this Google Drive link:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... 3Ur_tx_h39

Enjoy creating, sharing, and connecting with one another on the Journey Home!

The final artwork will be revealed to the Jamat on 28 November. We look forward to everyone’s participation!
