Sustainability: Our commitment and actions

Sustainability means meeting today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs (United Nations, 1987). It calls for a careful balance between environmental, social, and economic considerations, and is about making thoughtful choices that support people and the planet, not only for today but for the future.

Sustainability is also a core Islamic value, deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and reinforced by Mawlana Hazar Imam’s guidance on environmental stewardship. These teachings emphasise humanity’s role as Khalifah (stewards) of the Earth, entrusted with its care and preservation for generations to come.

At the Aga Khan Award for Architecture Presentation Ceremony in Kazan in 2019, Mawlana Shah Karim Shah explained this further:

“Both the natural world and the world of human capacities are divine gifts, but it is tempting sometimes to embrace one without thinking much about the other,” he said. “The Holy Qur’an asks Muslims not to be passive recipients of our Natural Habitat but instead to be faithful stewards of the divine creation.”

In this spirit, we have made a collective commitment to design and deliver a Didar that is as sustainable as possible.

This commitment is closely aligned with the UK Didar themes of kindness and gratitude. Kindness towards one another extends to kindness towards the world we share, while gratitude encourages us to value resources, avoid excess, and act with care. Through this lens, sustainability becomes an expression of our faith, our values, and our respect for creation.

Through this effort, we hope to leave a positive and lasting legacy by raising awareness of the choices the Jamat can make to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. Our aim is to inspire long-term behaviour change that supports sustainable practices.

How are we ensuring the Didar (and associated events) will be sustainable?

The leadership and organising teams have collectively committed to a Sustainability Charter. This charter takes a holistic approach to sustainability, encompassing environmental, social and economic considerations, whilst also committing to long-term behaviour change and transparency and accountability.
The two main objectives are to:

- Consciously minimise the environmental footprint of the event and associated activities.
- Encourage long-term behaviour change and innovation.

To help deliver these objectives, the following aims have been set:

- Reduce the procurement of new items wherever possible, in favour of hired items where possible we can, and prioritising reusable and recyclable materials.
- Adopt a near zero-landfill policy, with efforts to ensure that items can be re-used post-Didar, and with clear waste and recycling facilities provided at venues.
- Minimise single-use materials or items, opting for sustainable alternatives where possible.
- Ensure efficient energy use, including within venues, and opt for low-carbon options where available.
- Select sustainable suppliers where possible.

How can you help to ensure the Didar is as sustainable as possible?

Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and everyone has a part to play. Individual actions both in the lead up to and during the Didar - such as travel choices, waste disposal, and avoiding unnecessary consumption - can collectively make a significant difference. You can:

- Avoid single-use disposables and waste by bringing reusable water bottles to the Didar. There will be plenty of water refill stations for you to fill your water bottles.
- Choose low-carbon travel options such as organised low emission coaches, public transport, car-pooling, walking, or cycling, in line with our sustainability commitments.
- Avoid waste and excess, for example by taking only what you will eat to minimise food waste, and by considering whether an existing outfit can be re-worn or repurposed rather than purchasing something new for the event.
- Minimise waste and correctly sort it at the venues using the designated recycling bins.
- Return items at the end of the Didar to enable them to be reused at future events.
- Keep shared spaces clean and take all personal items with you when you leave.
- Practice patience and kindness: Sustainability also means being inclusive, respectful, and considerate of others during the event.
- Encourage others by setting a good example and challenging unkind and unsustainable behaviour.

How can sustainable actions count as acts of kindness to the Environment?

As part of the Gratitude to Kindness theme, we invite the Jamat to extend kindness towards the environment through simple, everyday actions. These acts may be one-off or ongoing, before, during, or after the Didar, and each reflects gratitude for the resources we share.

Examples of Kindness to the Environment include:

- I chose walking, cycling, or public transport when possible.
- I use reusable bottles, bags, or containers.
- I recycle waste properly.
- Out of gratitude for what I already have, I re-wear or repurpose my outfit for the Didar.
- I save water by turning off taps.
- I avoid wasting food.

These small actions, when taken together, become powerful expressions of gratitude, responsibility, and kindness in action.

The Jamat is encouraged to log acts of kindness - including those towards the environment - via iiuk.org or the Ismaili App (Click More > Gratitude to Kindness).

If thousands of us embrace more sustainable actions, the collective impact will reach far beyond the event. It will reflect a shift in mindset that we can carry into our homes and daily lives.

Together, through kindness, gratitude, and conscious action, let us help shape that future.

We are counting on you - every action matters.

Primary Week 3: Learning from Mawlana Hazar Imam’s teachings

Image

Welcome! Today, Nura wants to help you discover how the Imam guides us through his teachings, called Farmans.

What is a Farman?

Farman is a Persian term meaning “command,” “authority,” “will,” or “permission.” For Shia Ismaili Muslims, it refers to guidance given by the Imam-of-the-Time to his followers.
(source: https://www.instagram.com/p/DL7TEx3tGES/?hl=en)

Nura was growing braver every day. After meeting the big white bird with the lantern, she followed the glowing path through the forest. The lantern showed her where to step, but soon Nura noticed something new: Feathers. Do you want to know what the feathers taught her?

Read the story “Nura and the feathers of wisdom” in the Primary Light My Way booklet (pg. 26) (available here https://www.iiuk.org/owncloud/index.php ... 6R6etCqTBn? ).

Nura’s Kindness Activity

Stretch out your arms like wings.

Imagine you are Nura. Each time you make a kind or honest choice, your wings grow stronger.

Complete Week 3: Activity 2 and 3 in the Light My Way booklet

Feathers of wisdom taught Nura to be kind, brave and thoughtful in whatever she did.

Similarly, the Farmans of Mawlana Hazar Imam are like feathers of wisdom for us, which guide us to be kind, caring and stay on the right path.

Think about it

Read and reflect on a few Farmans of Mawlana Hazar Imam from the printed Farman books or read Farmans of Mawlana Shah Karim (may peace be upon him) from Primary 1, Book 5 pages 20-22.

What good choices can I make every day?

Note down your reflections in the LMW booklet

Parents: Remember to write a letter to your child(ren) in the Light My Way booklet on page 46

Secondary Week 3: The Light That Shines My Way

Image

Preparing for Didar begins with becoming aware of the permanent spiritual bond between the Imam and the murid, a bond experienced through light, feeling, and reflection.

Welcome Back

Find a quiet spot. Take one slow breath in… and out.

Think about this: Have you ever felt supported or cared for, even when someone wasn’t physically with you?

Write or think:

- One word that describes how that support felt

Explore

Read the phrase below:
Permanent Spiritual Bond

Break it down:

- Permanent – something that does not end
- Spiritual – something felt in the heart, not seen
- Bond – a strong connection

Think about it:

- Can something be real even if you can’t see it?
- How might this describe the relationship between the Imam and a murid?

Optional writing (in your Light My Way booklet, using the space provided to reflect - available here https://www.iiuk.org/owncloud/index.php ... 2?path=%2F):

- One sentence: “A permanent spiritual bond means…”

Engage

Read slowly:
“Your Imam is with you. Wherever you are, your Imam is with you.”

Choose ONE way to respond:

- Write one word that matches how this makes you feel
- OR draw a simple symbol or shape
- OR choose a colour that fits the feeling

There is no right or wrong answer.

Reflect

Finish this sentence:
“To get ready for Didar, my heart might need more ______.”

Close your eyes for a moment and sit with that thought.

Additional Games:

1. Wordsearch

2. Match It Up: Word → Meaning
Instructions: Match the word from Column A with its meanings in Column B

Arrangements for Children

If you’re a parent of young children, here are a few simple tips to help you plan ahead for the day: Plan ahead for your childcare needs for Didar!

What to pack:

Quiet toys and activities, for example, e.g. stickers, colouring, books
Milk and additional snacks - children’s meals will be available for lunch, menus and allergen information will be shared in advance. If your child has specific allergies, we encourage you to bring your own food
Required medication

Before leaving home

Make sure you clearly label your pram, carrier or car seat
Write your child’s name and your contact details on a wristband for your child
Consider putting an AirTag on your child as these are allowed through security.

To help you get around:

Buggies are allowed past security but not in the Didar Hall
Buggies can be stored in the designated buggy parks during Didar
Carriers and car seats can be taken into the Didar Hall

Little Village for children aged 0-5

There will be space for nursing and baby changing, with spring water and water heating facilities available
Soft play and activities will be available for children until 30 minutes before Intezar and post-Didar

Inter-Faith Meeting is for adults only

Please arrange childcare with family or friends following Didar if you are attending the inter-faith meeting
Pre-agree a meeting point post the inter-faith meeting

During the Didar

Please try and stay in the Didar Hall for as much as you can - a little bit of noise and movement is ok!
If you need to nurse, Little Village will be available to access, but will be unmanned

In case you and your child lose each other:

Agree a meeting point in advance
Remind your child to ask volunteers for help
Point out the information desks to your child on arrival where volunteers will be able to assist if they get lost.

Health and Accessibility Needs

We have made every reasonable effort to accommodate a wide range of needs and to make attendance as inclusive as possible. However, it may not be possible to meet every individual requirement. Please speak to a volunteer on the day if you have any concerns, and they will do their best to support you where possible.

Please note: Support on the day will be based on the information provided during registration and what can be reasonably accommodated at the venue.

Key Information

Seating and Chair Allocation

There are eight chair zones, each marked by a colour and letter. Chairs are not reserved in advance. Murids may choose a zone and select from available chairs on arrival.

If you wish to sit with family members, please enter the chair zone together. Once a chair is allocated, it is secured for the rest of the day using a numbered ticket. You may leave the Didar Hall and return to the same seat later.

Some seating areas are designated for hearing loop users, visual needs, high needs or dementia, and aisle seating (recommended for those using walkers). Chairs do not have armrests or high backs.

Wheelchair users follow the same process, and allocated wheelchair spaces are also secured for the day.

Higher Needs Seating

Higher Needs seating is located in Zones F (Purple) and G (Orange). These areas have a higher ratio of volunteers, dementia champions, and are closer to toilets.

Volunteers can provide general assistance but cannot provide personal or specialist care, including toileting, medication administration, lifting, or one-to-one support. If this level of support is required, please attend with a carer.

Accessibility Support Available on the Day

- Hearing loop: Zone G (Orange), with space for one family member
- Visual needs: Limited seating closer to screens in Zone A (Red); you may choose any area with the best screen access
- BSL interpretation: Designated area near the Medical Bay
- Wheelchair transfers: Available at the East and West entrances; short waiting times may occur.

A limited number of wheelchairs are available inside the Didar Hall. Please bring walking sticks or walkers where possible. Wheelchair parking is available on the boulevard and should be clearly labelled.

Non-Eligible Carers

Non-eligible carers providing disability or additional-needs support should report to registration on arrival to receive a green dot on their access card.
This allows entry into the Didar Hall until:

- 60 minutes before Didar (most carers)
- 30 minutes before Didar (high-needs support)

Carers may not have an allocated chair and should remain close to the person they support. A designated carers’ seating area will be available in the South Hall. Nannies must remain in the Social Hall.

SEND Quiet and Sensory Spaces

SEND quiet and sensory spaces are pre-allocated. A drop-in regulation and movement area is also available in the Social Hall.

These spaces are for individuals who need a calm or low-stimulation environment. Parents and carers must remain with children at all times. Volunteers can offer reassurance and guidance but cannot provide personal or specialist care.

Primary Week 4: Preparing Our Hearts for Didar

Welcome! Today, Nura is getting ready for a very special day — Didar.

What is Didar?

Didar is the blessed moment when we are in the presence of our Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim al Hussaini.

Have you ever seen someone you love after a long time? How did it make you feel inside?

Let us watch this video to learn more about it. As you watch the video, listen carefully and think about:

How does Didar help people feel close to the Imam and to Allah?

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhBVgSD ... ismaili%2F

Use the space provided in the Primary Light My Way booklet (available here https://www.iiuk.org/owncloud/index.php ... 6R6etCqTBn?) to:

Write or draw one thing that you learned from the video
Draw a heart and complete the sentence: Didar makes people feel ______
Write or draw yourself doing something kind.

Story time

Read the story - Nura prepares her heart from Primary Light My Way booklet (available herehttps://www.iiuk.org/owncloud/index.php/s/Foe7p6R6etCqTBn?).

The wise bird said to Nura, “Today, you will receive a special blessing, a moment of closeness, light, and love. To welcome it, you need only bring your best self.”

Nura learned that preparing for Didar is not only about how we dress or where we sit, it is also about how we prepare our hearts.

Preparing the Heart

Before Didar, we try to:

- Be calm and quiet
- Show respect and good manners (adab)
- Have grateful thoughts
- Be kind to everyone

Activity: Didar Space Simulation

Find a quiet space where you are.
Sit comfortably. Place your hand on your heart.
Take one slow breath in… and breathe out.

Think quietly:

- How do I want to feel during Didar?
- What can I do to show respect?

Complete Week 4, Activity 1 in the Primary Light My Way booklet

Optional Activity

Draw or write:

- Three things you might see in the Didar space
- One feeling you hope to carry in your heart

Remember
During Didar:

- Mawlana Hazar Imam blesses the Jamat
- Mawlana Hazar Imam makes a Farman
- We offer our bayah, mehmani, and love

Nura reminds us:

A calm and grateful heart helps us experience Didar deeply.

Welcome Back

Think about a time you were about to do something important (a test, performance, game, or meeting).

Which feeling fits best?

- excited
- nervous
- calm
- quiet
- happy

Write one feeling or just think about it.

Explore

Learn a new word: Adab

Adab means showing respect through:

actions
words
attitude

Think:

What does respectful behaviour look like in special moments?
Is respect only about what we do or also about how we feel inside?
Optional writing:

“For me, adab means…”

Engage

Before – During – After Didar

Choose one section below and reflect (use the space provided in Secondary Light My Way booklet - available here):

Before Didar

One thing I can do to prepare my heart

During Didar

One feeling I hope to have

After Didar

One quality I want to carry forward
Write 1–2 sentences or keywords.

Reflect

Complete this sentence honestly:

“After Didar, I want to remember to ______.”

Take one deep breath in… and out.

One-Line Promise

Instruction: Write a one-line promise that you want to make.

Prompt:
“After Didar, one small thing I want to practice is ______.”

Promise guidelines:
Write one clear, simple action:

- being kinder
- being more patient
